So how about in THIS topic, we dont start debating the merrits of the PGT vs. Miata? I am pretty sick of it. I happen to LOVE my new car, and there is nothing you can say to change that. With that said, sit back, relax, watch the pretty pictures, and just be HAPPY for me...

As I'm the ONE who requested more pictures of the car, let me be the first to say that YEAH!!! That should DEFINITELY be one of your favorite pics! Gorgeous car man! Great scenery for the background too. Much better than in a parking lot with a bunch of other cars there. I really like the pics. I REALLY LOVE the car!

I really like the Miata, but I only have one complaint.....I had my friends out the other night and those pop-up headlights are freakin' huge!!!! They look like stop signs popping out of the hood! On top of that I couldn't see outta the rearview b/c of his rollbar.

I would agree...but there are light modifications I can make to reduce the pop-up height...It seems I just pop-up too high.. shrug.. genetics...

That's a really sweet looking Miata you got there Darin. I'm happy to see you're really enjoying yours.
I'm also a big fan of the Miatas (or MX-5 as they're called abroad). Those cars have a lot of personality. They're quick and nimble and a hell of a lot of fun to drive. They also always prove themselves to handle very well at the autocrosses.
My brother has one and I love driving his around. In fact, it was my brother and his interest in his Miata that really got me into looking to improve my Probe. Now that he's got his Jag I think he'll finally let me autocross his Miata.
Here's some "glamor" pictures I took of his car when he let me take it for a cruise up the coast to Santa Barbara.

Awesome Miata Darin. I really like the interior color. I've only driven a couple of Miatas (a '96 M edition and a 2000 Base) but I loved every moment of it. That handling is unreal, and the sounds it makes are captivating. And NOTHING is better than that shifter. I would buy one in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

My girl has a '97 Red Miata that is really sweet. If I was a little smaller I would buy one in a second. They're so fun to drive. At least I get to drive them all day at work ;) We have one of the '99 10th anniversary models in stock right now. It's pretty damn sweet.

I understand where you are coming from completely as there is much pleasure to be had from a Miata in stock form. The Miata is a great car, however, To be a true "Sports Car" it would have to do the quarter better than a high 15 low 16(Its most certainly got the handling down ). With the conversion every sensory experience is quadrupled and it becomes a true sports car dipping to the low 13s in the quarter and pulling close to a g in the slalom.
It does not have to be a V8 either I have seen 4 bangers with turbos run quick to, so it would still be a true Miata. Different strokes for different folks.
The Miata is not a Sports Car... it is a Roadster that handles well and looks cute and at that it accomplishes its goal.

May 22nd, 2001, 01:53 PM
PLEASE! Lets not get into this debate.. the car IS a sports car, according to the folks at Guiness Book of Records which lists it as the best selling sports car of all time. Do you think MGB's weren't sports cars? The Miata doesnt exactly fit into the term ROADSTER as there is no large rear folding seat/trunk. Adding a V8 to this car would do nothing more than add weight to the front, to screw up the great 50-50 distribution. Add a small (lightweight)turbo system and the Miata will Have it all...except a back seat.

Nowhere in written history has anyone defined how much power a "sports car" is supposed to have. Therefore your conclusion is only a personal opinion.
A sports car is not about how much performance you HAVE, it's about how much performance you can USE.
Tell me how often you could squeal around residential neighborhoods in a Camaro, or even a Probe. You can't. There's not enough room, and the tires don't talk to you. With a Miata, you can. You can peel out at every opportunity. I'd buy one in a heartbeat, if I could carry skis with it.
Hell, even though my Probe sticks better than my old Rabbit GTI, I had a lot more fun with the Rabbit in tight neighborhoods.....without having to worry about bumpstops crashing, tires letting go all at once, etc.

Yes I do think that the MGBs where not sports cars they are roadsters.
http://www.sluiterm.cistron.nl/
Since the Miata is a direct rip-off of these originals, if the mgb is a roadster then the Miata is a roadster.
Who cares if you go to google.com and type in sports car and you get a link for Miatas... the search engine looks for words on web pages... I could put up a site with a Geo Metro and call it a sports car google would pick it up as well.
Hey! While we are on the subject of Geo Metros ... remember the Geo metro LSi convertible??? That had two seats was a convertible hmmmm so is that a sports car?!?!? Hell no!
The Miata is a roadster. If you go back and look at the definition I got from dictionary.com it fits your car word for word and most importantly it says an OPEN CAR... Does it say open car in any of your definitions of sports car? no.
Roadster! Roadster! Roadster! Roadster!Roadster! Roadster!
Couple of things here, Einstein..
1st, I thought I said if you want to debate "sports car or not" goto the thread I showed you
2ndly, The car is not OPEN when it has the TOP up...and what about the REST of the definition? So, lemme get this straight, Motorcyles are Roadsters cuz they have no top? That must hold true for my father in law's LeBarron. (shrug). Read the entire text. I could also do up a website which showed a drawing of my ASS and call it "sports car".
If you cant tell the dif tween what a Metro converible does and a Miata, you probably shouldnt be allowed to feed yourself with metal flatware.

My Z runs 13.3s so it smokes both your cars but my probe runs 16.6 which gets smoked by your probe but is close to the Miata! Your Miata is quicker, but if you allot me one length and the roll (by the end of the quarter about .5 of a second handicap) I think it will work out to a reaaaal close race! You have to use car test and no cheating taking out weight changing gear ratios etc. and you can change hp (be reasonable) for the exhaust. Then the "mega smurf" label under your name is very appropriate. Anyone who insults a Miata is simply misguided. Probably the same type of people who buy Harleys because of their image, even though they'd have more fun on a sportbike. But then I'm editorializing.
Wow, that was great! You guys were carrying on a conversation about me without me even being here  I personally think Miatas are girly girl cars, I've never ever ever liked them, I don't care if they're made by mazda. I always see 50+ year old moms and dads driving them, I in fact don't think I've ever seen a single person driving one that was under 35, lol. I just don't find it attractive at all, and if you guys wanna judge me for the way I think of a stupid Miata, that shows your true maturity levels
Or, instead of badmouthing a car that I obviously like, you could just do the noble thing and say, "Nice ride, dood...not my style, but Good for you."
(shrug)
I only see 35yr old Women driving Probes...so what?

The only 60 year old lady I've seen driving a probe was when I was working at a ford dealer in Milwaukee, every other probe I've seen has a guy driving it or a hottie driving it, oh wait, there was a guy in Milwaukee that had a GORGEOUS 95gt that seemed to be in his 30's.
I'm glad you like your car Darin, I'm actually surprised you got it, did you sell the Altima to get it? Or do you have three cars now? :wtf::eek:

What MPH is your Z "running" in the 1/4? If its not more than 108 its doesnt "smoke" anything. And why would I allow you a handicap? Run whatcha Brung. Cartest means DICK, btw.
I will play around with it when I get home, btw.
Oh, and there is more to racing than "Quarter Mile".

What are you talking about dude?!!? a 13.3 is faster than a 13.7 aaaany day of the week. Trap speed shows the potential of the car to run a better time however until you can put the power down it doesnt mean "DICK". FWIW 13.3 at 110.
Did you get a time for the Miata???
I got 16.0 at 88 for my pgt auto, I did add 10hp and 10lb ft of torque and reduced the overall height by two inches and ground clearence by 2 inches for my Intraxes. This is with automatic gear ratios.
Oh and my car out handled a Miata at Dallas International Speedway(On cartest) Every time!!!
BRING IT ON SUCKA!!!!!

On Cartest I got my PGT to 13.6@107mph. Speed in the 1/4 DOES mean "dick" if you talk about who would win in a street race. I would go with the car that has a higher trap speed at the 1/4 mile, in a street race every time.
But it IS kinda messed up, your Z needs 100 MORE hp than my pgt to go 3mph faster.. heehee

No, my cartest is having problems...I will try to re-install it.

You are high...or are entering false data about either of the cars. (shrug)

I promise I am not entering false data... it is an automatic and I got the right gear ratios I added 10hp and 10lb ft of torque for my mods which is very reasonable for my mods and also dropped the car 2 inches.
Give me the dimensions of your tires and I will do it for you.. I will also add 5hp and 5lb ft of tq for the exhaust and reduce 30lbs for the spare tire and the lighter wheels.
I will take screen shots

Dallas International Speedway? How many corners does it have? Or is it just an oval? All I can say is, STOCK Miatas are nearly ALWAYS faster than MODDED Probes in SCCA autocrosses.
As for Miatas being "girly" cars, it's my opinion that anyone who wastes their time worrying about what kind of person drives a certain car is obviously either too self-concious or has an inferiority complex. Good choice of a car, Darin

Thanks, Hans. I am not upset about the reactions of the board to my new car. Just think had I purchased that CIVIC at the dealership!! haha ;)
The people "in the know"...those "true car enthusiasts" have all responded the right way. The people that matter know the deal bro. Its about the sport.

Actually I came in 6th out of 80 cars in my class at a recent SCCA event nearby, and I placed ahead of a lot of Miatas, lil nissans, BWM's, Audi's, the probe handles awesome and you can't beat my skillz

You must have some half-assed Miata drivers in your neck of the woods, then....
Here are the results of the 2000 SCCA Nationals....
B-Stock Class (containing 14 Miatas).....best time 108.567, worst time 110.796
G-Stock Class (which is what PGTs compete in).....best time of 112.948, held by a Type-R.
How about Mustangs/Camaros/Firebirds, you ask? Nope, only 4 of the 16 cars in F-Stock class were able to beat the SLOWEST Miata. So how do you like them apples?
Darin, this issue of Grassroots Motorsports has a good article about prepping a Miata, let me know if you want it

2000 Miata w/ 5.0 engine shoehorned into engine bay:
1-60mph in 4.2sec
1/4-mile in 12.2sec (HOLY SHEET!...can you say Viper Killer!)
