does using a test pipe make the car really loud?
sorry for the dumb Q...just wondering..

Yes it will make your exhaust louder. How loud, depends on what kind of exhaust you have. With my 2.25" inner diameter, mandrel bent pipe, no resonator, and chambered Dynomax, it made my exhaust a lot louder. but I love it!

when james rides through the ghettos of Warren, all the "gangbangers" go back to their corner because his car sounds like it will swallow them whole.

dr of rx, just go ahead and get the pipe... i didn't install mine yet, but I got mine from Jeff also, it's a nice pipe, it was easier than going to muffler shops trying to have someone cut and weld one for you. I don't expect you'll be able to smell it inside the car as much unless you are sitting still in weather with no wind. My cat smells like eggs anyhow sometimes. Can't wait to take the bitch out. Rick, you're always saying "gross poluters" but do you realize that it's spelled "pollute" not "polute"?????

March 22nd, 2001, 11:42 PM
Spelling it with that extra "L" puts out more needless pollution. it was intentional.

I do smell exhaust at redlights when I have my windows and moon roof open. But keep in mind that its no where near as bad as following a bus or redneck truck.
At speed I don't smell a thing ever!
The car will be a tad louder below 5k rpms but it will be loud as hell at WOT. I absolutely love mine and I dont even have a muffler! Sometimes it sounds bad from inside the car, but, from outside the car it sounds absolutely fantastic. You should let someone drive your car around a parking lot (I MEAN AT THE TRACK [smile]) and listen to it.....very sweet!!!!!!!

do you mean it sounds more powerful, or is more powerful (or both?) ?
honestly, how lound is it? i dont want something thats gonna make me tone deaf.

Honestly, I barely every smell the fumes... maybe once a month.

March 24th, 2001, 08:32 AM
well when i say more powerful i mean that before if i was just regurlarly accelerating my exhaust only really made a noise from 2100-3100 or so rpms and then i would hear mostly just the engine. with the test pipe the exhaust now makes a deeper and louder tone from 2100-3100 but after that you can still hear the exhaust, especially on wot its pretty loud. i wouldnt call it deafening though because i have 2 12's and i couldnt hear it over them, but they were up pretty loud, i dont know for sure but it does sound really nice.

Well, we installed Ben's (spada) test pipe today, (from Jeff Jeske, very nice quality) His car is a bit louder, but not annoying.. just nice and mellow. His exhaust consists of 2" press bends (smoother than crimps, not as smooth as mandrel), resonator, and Flowmaster dual outlet muffler.

Yeah, i didn't smell any fumes at all really. I used to smell fumes of eggs and shit sitting at a light, and i used to get a weird smell if i gunned it at over 4000 rpms in 5th gear on the xway.. Tried it out today on the xway back to school, it was perfect. Jeff's test pipe is nice... as always if you can find someone to weld you one for cheaper go for it, if you don't want to have someone do that, or go find all the parts and stuff, just get it from jeff. The actually difference will be seen at the track in like two weeks, so i'll let you guys know the diff

wow.....I have not heard one bad thing about jeff. Everyone has been saying that he makes a quality product and ships it fast. I also like that he will custom make it for you for a different length. I might want to get one because my 6" extension is 2" piping.......But I don't really want a really loud car. And da popo will be more suspicious about the cat if it's incredibly loud. Anyone have sound clips or videos? My original plan was to get a catco cat.....but I like dealing with a respected fellow prober......Right now I have a greddy exhuast....will a test pipe really make it too loud?

Lemme tell ya guys.
Borla Cat back + Test Pipe = Holyshitballsbatman!!!
I love the sounds. Not ricey at all. Kinda sounds like an Indy car at around 5K. Love it. I can't smell exhaust either. I did feel a little at the butt dyno also, but barely. Remember, a test pipe is just a piece of the entire thing ("thing" being, CAI/RAI, bored TB, Ported Intake, headers, test pipe, cat back exhaust,)
I had mine made for 20 bones here locally but a shop. I just had them weld on flanges in case I ever want to put the cat back on.

ok, we have established that it will smell a little, be pretty loud at WOT, but what about cruising at highway speeds? is 5K RPM pretty much the break point for loud or not so loud?
i like to be able to hear myself think..ya know?
MN Probe GT
March 28th, 2001, 03:03 PM
I've found that my greddy is quiet at idle, and up to about 2500 RPM. Right there it gets pretty loud, but then it gets quiet again. Like 3,000 or 4,000 isn't that loud when cruising.

I made a straight pipe to replace my cat and it didn't make it much louder. I have a 2.25" exhaust with a stock muffler. yes it is stinky

i have a gutted cat with 2 1/2" piping w/ a flowmaster 40 series muffler. before i had the came set-up with the stock cat. the sound barely changed at all. well worth the trade-off. it is a little smelly, but nothing extreme, especially with california smog.

Do these things offer any kind of performance gain, or is it mainly just for sound??? If so how much hp do you think they will add? thanks.
tprobe93
March 28th, 2001, 07:55 PM
well better flow means more horsepower. with the butt dynoe i would say that it was a little more noticable than my cold air intake. i think jeff says 8 whp.

Or you could go to an rxhaust shop and have them make one and install it for about 40?

March 29th, 2001, 11:16 AM
yeah.. depending on where you live though. It's hard to some people to find a shop to make them a test pipe, especially if they live in a strict emissions area or out in the country somewhere.

well the problem is that many places wont remove your cat for you because they are not suppose to.
MN Probe GT
March 29th, 2001, 12:43 PM
Yes, it's illegal to remove your cat if a qualified tech hasn't said it's toast. But everyone does it anyway. I don't know of any place that will make me one, and I have heard good things about jeff's product. But I also have a 97, and that's why I probably won't get it. damn OBDII.

About the sound on the freeway, my exhaust is quieter with the test pipe at around 4-5k than it was with the cat... go figure

March 31st, 2001, 12:56 AM
If you are worried about the ((((LOUDNESS)))) then you probably shouldn't get one unless you REALLY are only gonna use it for the TRACK.
It's not that loud normal driving but at WOT you can hear it for miles at night.
