i love the sound of it, compared to my previous muffler (which is for sale now, check F/S forum shortly) the PS is quieter but just as deep and mellow....i would say more mellow than throaty...but i love it....and i feel some gain from the butt dyno....a lil better pick up and feel that the exhaust is coming out with less pressure (of course) and the car just runs a lil smoother i think  the yellow inside is gay but im sure it will burn off or get covered soon enough

however, i notice my shifter is more stiff...its like when u push it over to the left to get into 1st but not into 1st yet, and then let go, the shifter wont bounce back to the middle b/t the 3rd and 4th....i thought maybe the bigger pipe is interferring from under but i dont hear any rubbing of metal....wonder whats the dilio...but all in all im loving it so far

hey, you guys got any pics of the PS installed? is the muffler black along with the piping? or is the muffler polished, chrome, etc? what size tip is it? the edges of the tip rolled or flat? and it has a yellow center? what do you guys think the comparison of the PS sound is to the Borla? i've heard the Borla and love the sound of it. been thinking about buying it for awhile. just cant make up my mind.

Rayman
March 24th, 2001, 10:42 PM
well i just got mine on today so no pics yet....and to answer ur questions....it is black pipes and muffler with chrome dual 2" tips. the muffler hides really nice under the car, only the tips are visible. i never heard the borla, but from what i can hear with the PS....i dont think u can get too much nicer exhaust sound off a V6  yes it is that nice ;)

LLADNAR
March 25th, 2001, 07:28 AM
actually the tips are 2.5 inch,,i measured them:grin:

March 25th, 2001, 10:02 AM
I've had the PS on for a while now and love the deep, throaty sound at low rpms. Makes everyone turn around and check the car out!
You made a wise choice as its best value for $$$( if u have less of it ).
I feel a big difference as my car seems to be revving and moving more freely.
I love it

BTW, that yellow just gets covered in about 500 miles of driving or so.

yea man its really nice now, i love it, i would get the headers too if i was staying N/A but im not....dont wanna waste my money cz the turbos not gonna work with it anyways.....but yea the yellow is already going away some and ive only had 100 miles on it since i put it on....and yea the tips are 2.5 now i remember when i measured it in my house before i had it on last week.... its good stuff....i can now really rev at the rice and show them what an exhaust should sound like

hell yeah, welcome to the club. i've had my PS on for about 7 months now, and still love the thing. it's probably one of the best things i've done so far for the money. but that might change after my pheno install. but the muffler looks way better than those gay ass huge tips all those ricer civic guys get. and the sound is just something you can't explain, it's perfect.

as for a pic, i have one pretty much of the tips alone, but you can get the hint.

I what to get one to! Soon.
Are all the hangers and everything on it all ready? How hard is the install? Can it be done in one night(4 hours)? Anything extra I have to buy for the install?

Trey
March 26th, 2001, 01:27 PM
I've had mine on for nearly 2 years now. I did change out the muffler(to a flowmaster 40 series) and it sounds better in my opinion. And still after 2 years, even with all the crap they put in the roads in the winter, there is absolutley no rust....in fact, most of the origional paint is still there.

you can order it from anywhere like nopi, carparts.com, and many others. those seem to be the popular sites for it. if you can get a hold of a coupon, you can get it from carparts.com for really cheap.

yea the hangers all come on the pipes and on the muffler, and comes with some exhaust clamps and gasket....i had a shop to do it in like 45 mins....i told them to weld the 2 pipes (they come in 2 sections) and the muffler also....so if u decide to weld, most people wouldnt be able to do that themselves....but i dont think it would take any longer than 4 hrs. but yall NEED to get this....im loving it more and more by the minute....i drove in a parking deck today, dude theres not a word to describe how throaty that thing is...and its seems to have settled in my car now and getting a lil louder...but LOVELY!!! GET THEM...order them NOW....theres probably a good lil wait....carparts, summitracing....they all carry them, i dont think autozone would. i got mine off ebay for 150 shipped, got them in my house in less than a week  hehehe

So does anyone have some real descriptions of this exhaust? We've heard that it's really good. It sounds good. We've heard all that. Let's get specific. Is it loud? Smooth? Raspy? Deep? Is it quiet at low rpms and screams at high rpms? Is it loud and grumbly at idle and quieter up top? Let's hear it all. More pics would be nice too...

No it doesn't come with a cat. It is just all of the pipe after the cat and the muffler. Oh yeah it also has a resonater just after the cat I think. Just ordered mine from Summit Racing. They said it was on back-order too.

ok, the PS is a low rumble sound, very nice. it is louder in the lower rpm's then softens in the higher. when coasting, like in 4th or 5th gear, it is quiet, but still heard, like a steady rumble. trust me, it's the perfect exhaust sound to me.

word to that....it may be a lil loud for some, but its a rumble loud....and esp. under heavy acceleration....or when ur dragging or one gear lower where u should be like in 5th trying to pass someone. but its deep and raspy i would say

word to ya mama...
Seriously though, has anyone had it for several months yet? How much does the sound change when it packs out? Also, does it "burble" when you let off the gas? I don't really want that.

I remember using a Leistritz (sp?) on my GTI, and when it was brand new it was whisper quiet like a Civic or something, then awhile later it got damn loud....

actually, i had mine on since last july. when the car is warm, the exhaust is MUCH louder. it kinda has to heat up. and i noticed a little difference in sound since i got it. it seems a little louder, but better. but the change was so gradual i can't even really tell. but you have to break it in, like any exhaust. just trust me, it's nothin short of excellent!

pacesetter part # is 88-1403 (prefix PSM for summitracing) the cat...many said its not worth money, u wont see much gain unless the one u have on now is very bad....and dont get bought into the propaganda of a "hi-flow" cat....theyre all basically the same, so i wouldnt waste my good 80+ bucks on a cat that u dont need. as for in front of the cat....thats the down pipe and flex pipe and stuff...up to ur headers....everyone whos done headers recommends it (the runners from the bottom of ur engine block down to the exhaust....3 into one in front and back side of the block) its been said headers are one of the best mod for the money also, u will see a nice gain from an intake, headers and catback all working together...probably good for 15hp give or take.... search on that guys there are many info on that

Talking about headers, anyone know of the biggest diameter collector header for the 2.5? I have 3" from the flex pipe back (3"cat as well). I plan on getting the SC from knight and don't want to bottle neck my exhaust with something smaller than what I have right now. But when it comes down to it 2.5" may not make a big deal... though with the SC who knows? Any suggestions? I've heard probs with the pacesetter rusting too quick... this true? Later ya'll...

probepimp
March 29th, 2001, 01:46 PM
yes, the pacesetter has built in resonators.

and i dunno about other people's pacesetters, but i had mine since last july, and it went through it's first winter. and let me tell ya, wisconsin winters are BAD! and as of now, i have no rust at all, 0, notta!

Just curious why you would purchase a cat-back system when you have a turbo in progress.. would it not make sense to save some money for some much needed larger diameter piping when the compressor goes in??

good question....i have had considered and actually wanted custom 3" mandrel bent but there are NO shops in town who does mandrel bent the only shop i found about 30 mins from here that does it (but still just cutting prebent elbows and welding the straight sections) quoted me 350-400 bucks for the whole system. and the mechanic himself who gave me the quote (showed me his turboed ford truck) said that its not worth my money, and that a 2.5" will do very well and would be enough for my setup/boostage. also, andrew (asword) here who has a turbo gt is also running just an aftermarket 2.5" or even smaller on his....and seems to be just fine.....i just figure its much much easier and less hassle for me to just do with a catback that just bolts on and not worry about custom piping expenses

I was kind of in a hurry when I posted those sound clips, so I didn't get much chance to explain it any.

Basically, it has a loud low end. It's deep and smooth sounding. Then at about 3000 RPM, the sound almost totally goes away and all you hear is my open intake. The best part is the loud idle. I love sitting at lights and hearing my exhaust. It's just a low rumble back there. Great sound.

does it drone? the stock exhaust gets loudest between 2-3k, but still doesnt drone. how loud is it inside?

it drones when ur underheavy load.....or when ur one gear too high and dragging it up to speed.....but like others have said, the sound fades out a lil and gets back to normal after like 3k rpm so its not a constant sound, which is good.....the idle is quite tamed i have to say....it doesnt RUMBLE like a V8 but it growls lowly...not earth shittering but its a nice growl

Put some pacesetter headers on there and it'll rumble. It picks up a fluttering sound. You can hear the exhaust pulses. You can hear that in my idle mp3.

Is the Pacesetter exhaust fully stainless?

TThat sounds pretty impressive! Does anyone know how it sounds compared to the borla? How about power differences with the pace setter and the borla? I gotta say For the $$ it looks really good

The PS should/does perform better than the borla due to the larger piping. The PS has the largest piping you can get in an aftermarket catback(well outa borla 2", Greddy 2.3/8", PS 2.5")

I'll get the sound eventually, I haven't had any time yet, too damn busy, and now its fuggen cold out, sorry.

anyone know the cheapest place to pick ona these kits up now? carparts.com is kinda pricey at $194 plus $6 shipping. I would really like to get a pacesetter now that i've heard all these good things about em, but I don't really know where to look. thx!

edit: make that $181 shipped (after coupon). still does anyone know of a cheaper route?

For those that wonder about the pacesetter w/ testpipe..... pacetter exhaust=nice deep tone, very nice.......pacesetter/testpipe=louder lower rpms but gets kind of raspy around 3500. very good performance though

sorry, but i had seen people get it for as low as $120, and money is a big issue thats all. i do think $180 is a pretty good deal though.

I just bought mine for $178 shipped from NOPI
I am happy about that because the price has gone down significantly lately
before i was gonna get one and it was like $200 shipped
well i'll tell you how everything goes

Well, it just came in the mail only like 4 days after i bought it
there are a few places where the paint has come off during the mailing process
would you suggest i touch them up, or will it all burn-off anyway?

Well, i tried to install my PS today and ran into a problem right off the bat... i couldn't get the nuts off of the back of the cat  i have the right socket and was pounding on the wrench (after i couldn't do it with my hands) with baseball bats and the likes
i tried wd 40 and that didn't work either
i decided that i could blow them off with a blowtorch, so i go and get one of those propane jobs (12.50)
i decided not to just go and throw flames all over the place, so i am gonna ask. are there any fuel lines in the general area of the cat that i should be worried about?
thanx
also i found a hole in my cat

Before you go lighting stuff on fire, get a pipe (nice solid one, not conduit) and make sure it fits around the end of the socket wrench and make sure it is 2-3 feet. then try to break those nutz. leverage is best daniel-son. i know you think it won't fit but it does, all you need it a 1/4 turn to break the nutz then you are home free. but if you feel saucey you can heat up the nutz first then try the extension while they are hot, if they don't break after that then cut the nuts off <--- he he he just had to say that }) this should work if it doesn't then your nutz are froze. :freak: :V

like he said....add an extension and get those babies busted loose. i ended up heating mine and then using a foot and a half breaker bar to get them busted loose. if you can't do it like that.....then torch them off. :darin: just heat towards the ground....never towards the car
Good Luck

Okay, i got my exhaust in. i love it
here's how it went... since i had a hole in my cat, i went down to meineke to get it replaced. i told him to take my exhaust off while he was at it
so i drove home with just a cat (i got some looks..damn it was loud)
then i installed my exhaust. it was so easy with everything taken off for me
only one problem with the install, when you put everything on to begin with, the instructions say to hand tighten. then when its all done, you tighten with a wrench
i forgot to wrench one clamp next to the muffler and my muffler almost fell off in the test drive
i didn't notice and was all like "damn, they were right about that droning. its incessant"
but when i got home, i noticed the muffler was all wrong, so i clamped it down tight and my exhaust tone is SWEET now!

oh, one thing... about the yellow: the yellow inside the tips is blackening but what has everyone done about the yellow strip around the tip near the muffler
it is kinda hidden, but i would like to get rid of it
also, everyone said that the smell was due to the part number stickers on the piping. this is not true. i took those off before the install and i still have the smell problem. my girlfriend was complaining but it should go away right?

SePHiRo
November 28th, 2001, 10:57 AM
That smell is the paint burning off probably.

I got a pacesetter (mostly just for the piping) and I noticed that the resonator seems to be welded on backwards... aren't you supposed to see the little holes when you look into the pipe/res in the direction that the air is supposed to travel?

They'll burn off anyway in a few days, and the smell will be gone as well.

DOES IT FIT OBD-II CARS??? DOES IT HAVE THE EXTRA PIECE YOU NEED FOR IT????

ALSO the two pipes running to the tips look like ass and are quite small

I got the free extension f/ Borla :D They were more than happy to send me one even though I said pacesetter on the phone by accident.

Duh.

And you don't want huge pipes coming out of your muffler. Those are 2.5" tips..... the piping really isn't that small.

Any muffler sounds nice on a probe.....but for a cat back with custom muffler you should expect to pay $400 and it wont be mandrel bent.

PS has a very attractive price....just wish the muffler didn't look like ***$.

I agree the tips look nice but the tips should be connected to the muffler.

I think I am just going to cut the muffler off all together and put dual ps extension on it.

I like it loud!
