I have an ACT 4 puck racing clutch in my car... i absolutely love the way it feels... very solid and precise... however, it makes some god-aweful noises. it almost sounds like a squealing belt or something, but i know for a fact that there are no belts loose. it only happens for a second when i am starting from a stop, or going into reverse from a stop. whenever i try and slip the clutch a little bit, it makes this noise. any ideas what it is? is it maybe supposed to do this for some stupid reason(though i can't see why...) i see no bad effects... other than the noise itself. it has been in for a few months(screaming at me the entire time) and it works perfectly... has anybody else had this problem? anybody know what the hell it is, or how to get rid of it? please help, it doesn't hurt the performance, and i have gotten used to it, but it is kind of annoying.

That's what you get for spending wayy too much money, on wayy too much clutch for your car. :D I think you are hearing chatter...Find a guy w/ a ViTek Clutch...it does similar things.

There's your problem. Clutches of your type don't like the "s" word.

actually, it is not chatter. i know what chatter is. it is what rattles your whole car and feels similar to wheelhop. i called ACT about chatter before i got it installed so i knew what to look for, and what to alleviate. it took me a month or so, but i got used to the clutch and chatter is not a problem at all anymore
shomegrown: it isn't slipping the clutch so much, but more of letting it out easily. if you just dump the clutch, it grabs so hard my dead grandmother could feel it. it is more of just letting it out slowly, like you would for everyday driving. if you are at a stopsign, do you just dump the clutch when you start to go? probably not, or your differential must hate you :)

It should be solved with a little of more-gas-less-clutch or if you are in traffic less-gas-more-clutch......

most of the time, i can make the noise quit... my main question is though... what the hell is it? is something screwed up in the clutch? it sounds like maybe the throwout bearing, judging by comparing where the pedal is relative to the noise i hear EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPP!!!!!!! :) i am just concerned that maybe i got some bad parts from the factory that got installed with the clutch? maybe the clutch is defective? you can't tell me that it is SUPPOSED to make that noise... it's fuggin loud!
any body else ever have this problem? how did you fix it?

My friend has a four puck clutch on his 3000GT and his chatters. Since your clutch is relatively new there are parts on the disc that have to wear down, it took about a month or so to get ride of the nose. Otherwise it really could just be back chatter, but why did you decide to get the puck clutch? espically for street driving.

as i have said before, this is not chatter. it has not chattered since about two weeks after i got it put in. clutch chatter shakes your whole dashboard, and feels similar to wheelhop. I have talked directly with ACT about chatter, and confirmed this. they also said to expect to hear a noise when i shift... this noise is the copper disc, and just the noise it makes. i can also hear this noise that they were talking about... sort of a high pitched "shhhhing" pretty quiet, but i can tell it's there. but there is also a much louder, much more irritating noise accompanying it. this noise sounds like "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPP" like a squeal or something.
I am not sure why i picked this clutch, but i am glad i did. i love the way it feels and drives... i can definantly notice a HUGE difference over the stock clutch. i give it :tup: except for that damned noise. it doesn't cause any problems, just makes noise. :)

i really have never heard of that problem. I know that you can send back your clutch to ACT and they will have a look at it, i believe that they don't charge you eather.

nevermind... the noise went away as soon as it got warm. maybe it is just cold sensitive? i tried to make it make that noise today, and i coudn't... i think the throwout bearing just doesn't like the cold-ass kansas winters, as that is what it has sounded like has been doing the squealing all along...
whatever

Just about EVERY 4 puck, 6 puck design clutch does this.
It sounds like a whistle, i know the sound. I had a puck clutch and a ACT flywheel.
Im pretty sure its just friction. the material on a puck clutch is not soft at all..very hard ceramic..and it just squeels when you try to slip it.....like when you scratch your nails on the chalkboard!
It's no big deal.
