View Full Version : Need for aftermarket tranny

Well all i have to say is our trannys really suck. The third gear is so weak. I just destroyed my 3rd tranny(626 tranny) luckily i have a fourth sittin at home which is over 2 1/2 hrs away. I know it broke from the abuse (power shifting..Cant ressist chriping tires) but there's gotta be something i can do to make these gears stronger. This is the 2nd third gear i have shattered from power shifting. I know I know you are all gonna say stop power shifting but its so damn tempting ...especially when your racing. With the old probe tranny i was chirping 4th gear. Well anywayz just wanted to see if there are any aftermarket tranny's that can hold up. I was thinking CZT earlier but he is no longer building those tranny's.

there isn't any trannys. there was some stuff CZT was doing but right now there really isn't any. just stop power shifting. hell i don't have to do it and i still demolish other people. i just don't beat on the car that hard

I have a mtx tranny from a 92 MX3 GS. I think thats the same as your tranny. It can be at your door for 200. Let me know if your interested. And if your wondering about my seller rating I am more often on mx-3.com. Go on there and check the seller feedback on the forum. I should be about 5 down. AIM: Projekmx3 or Piranhapro@chartermi.net

Want to not have to worry about 3rd? Stop driving like an ass.

yeah um....it just doesn't make sense that you are beating your car so badly.... you could drive your car a lot smoother and less harsh and still faster than the way you beat up on it now. It truly makes no logical sense....

Power shifting i so addictive ...the rpm's barely drop and it seems my car just lunges forward after every shift. The is such a big difference from regular shifting compared to power shifting. I never miss a gear when i power shift and don't think i have ever grinded a gear during power shifting ....but it is quitre stressful on our weak trannies. I'm try to do minimal power shifting on this tranny. The funny thing is none of my tranny's go when i'm power shifting they go sometime after. My last tranny i was going to mcdonalds driving nice and easy when the 3rd gear just gave out and fell apart.

ur chirping in 4th cause you have bad tires, not cause you're pushing that much power through your tranny. And yes i agree with you, we need aftermarket trannies. You guys that are saying be easier on ur car, well ur just pansies. I was installing czt's hi-hp tranny kit today, which is supposed to protect the third gear goin alot better according to rob, but neways its kind of a pain to get the new dif in. Its too big for the case and requires shaving (which rob told me about beforehand neway). But one part of the case that was scraping was so incredibly thin ( the rest of it is thick as anything) and while i as grinding it down (very moderately as well, i test fitted the dif over 20 times shaving as little as possible) i went through the case and have a hole the size of a nickle in my case. Looking at the area, it was practically the width of a couple peices of paper. Our trannies are a joke.

Actually this tires are pretty decent ......wtih the 626 tranny i was chirping third pretty damn loud with 18" wheels with grade "A" traction tires. But the CZT tranny internals sound like a real pain in the *** to install. Does cryotreating the gears work well?

ya if you want to drive like vin diesel you're gonna have to spend 10,000 or so and get some straight-cut race gears, or like another member said a racing tranny. Honestly how many cars out there can survive having their hp increased and not blow the tranny when power-shifted all the time? It's like complaining that your tires wear out too fast when you do burnouts and take corners at full speed everyday.

I'm on my third tranny and I do not drive like an ass. I am only hard on the car when I am racing, which is about maybe 2-3 times a month. I don't have much time to hit up the track and I've become more cautious of street racing since a drag racing ticket would just kill me right now. The first tranny would only go into 1st, 3rd, and 5th. The second tranny is now officially stuck in 3rd gear. Our trannies stink and I hate them.

December 6th, 2004, 12:44 PM
If you beat on any car things will break down. Powershifting would constitute beating on the car. I can't say I'm a fan of the tranny's, but if you race/otherwise beat on the tranny then things will break down. Just like the OEM clutch it will work fine within "stock" usage, but if you start pushing more power it won't handle it. Same thing would go for the tranny.
"Whoever said learn to drive, ur a moron, half the time when his car is being beat on I'm driving, and I would think of myself as a pretty good driver LOL"
If you're a good driver why would you beat on the car? If you're such a good driver then don't power shift, learn a little better clutch/throttle control.
"The funny thing is none of my tranny's go when i'm power shifting they go sometime after. My last tranny i was going to mcdonalds driving nice and easy when the 3rd gear just gave out and fell apart."
I don't see what's funny about that. You're stressing/damaging the tranny and shortly there after weakened/damaged part[s] break down. I can understand what you're saying somewhat, that it doesn't break during the act. If that's the case you should just powershift all the time

Well after i got my clutchmaster stage 2 with a fidanza flywheel i was able to chirp third, and i dont powershift, i guess im just able to shift pretty quick i guess. here is a vid where you can hear third pretty good. just right click and save as.
http://slowmonte.cryptnix.com/videos/PROBEvsMONTE.mpg
So i guess powershifting isnt necessary if you want to bark 3rd in my opinion, just need to have a quick shift and a good clutch.

December 6th, 2004, 03:42 PM
I can also chirp third with the probe tranny without power shifting, but whatever.Assuming that we don't know how to drive......take a ride with us shotty and then say that. Whats the point of driving a car and modding it if you don't drive it hard. Thats like buying a viper and never going full throttle....whats the ****in point. I still say we have a really weak third gear and that it could be alot stronger ....the whole point of this post was to see if there were any tranny's that are out there that could take more abuse ...or any suggestions to make my tranny a bit stronger...but all you ppl see is me breaking my tranny and begin to criticize . So criticize if you want it really doesn't matter cause i know there's always somone who will criticize.

i just dont rag on the car all the time. only when racing. then again my cars are not daily drivers neither. just be easy on the powershifting since there seems to be any logical option other than our oem trans except for the czt internals which does seem like a big pain in the ass. id invest in more mods and stop the powershifting. id rather dump money that way that keep buying transmission after transmission. just my .02

If you're going to post some stupid flamebait shit, then expect to get flamed. You could search for the answer to your question, the addition of your "Oh I like ripping transmissions apart for fun, then bitching about how weak they are" is bound to cause you to get flamed. I didn't even think the first post was flaming. I could have been much more harsh on you (like now).

I think this thread is funny, to say the least. I dunno what this Quaife racing transmission is about, but I guarantee it doesnt exist. At this point, with so many 2ond gen boosted probes, unless the price was like 10k, someone would have bought one.
Dude, this thread IS flamebait. You wanna find out if there is any way to strengthen the tranny? Word it better, dont add the fact you like to powershift, dont add the fact you like breaking them, DONT add the fact you've broken 4 already, etc.
EX: "I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to strengthen the GT transmission. They are really weak."
That, would not get you shit. That, would get the same point across. Best of all, that would not make you look like a complete dumbass.

I have to agree with the people saying that if you're chirping 4th gear then you have bad tires. "Grade A" traction rating or not (that's just BS anyway), it's juts the tires. Why is it such a big deal that you can chirp the tires anyway?

Well, there is actually a LOT that can be done to our trannies, but, sheesh.. Do you really want to pay for it?
I charged $1400 for mine and still got flak for it, but, that barely touched on the pricing of all that I did.
It wasn't the workload it was the money and all the running around and BS that was required. Sending stuff out to cryo, inspecting every stinking inch of a nasty ass smelly trans, carefully checking shift throw lengths and clearances, being sent burned up and run dry transmissions as cores and having to scramble to get internals to go into the cases, etc...
I would LOVE to do a dogbox for the PGT, I have the gearcutters ready to run if given the word but I don't know how many of you would want to hear the "SHRACK!!!" every time you shifted your car in stop and go traffic. It would scare small children. ;) Plus, the cost?!?! Oh boy you would all really bitch up a storm... ;)
OTOH, I have new billet shiftforks already that will go in my own transmission for testing along with some modifications to the rod selector and gear selector teeth that make shifts a lot nicer. But, I mean, why? It takes hours and hours and hours and hours (get the idea) to do all this stuff and for what? So I can, at the last minute, find that I have to spend another 200 dollars on replacing a 3rd gear pair because your trans failed magnaflux?
It just doesn't pay. But, you have an option that is cheaper and will help keep your trans together, and thats the best I can do for now. If anyone else figures something out then go for it.
You have the bracket, you have the lower final and 2-way LSD with 4 spider diff. The rest is up to you. The only thing more I could do is drive your car for you. ;)

Its true though, the G5M-R transmission was not designed to withstand high torque applications. Especially shock loading high torque applications. The freakin Protege transmission is essentially the same thing, in regards to torque capacity!! If you wanted a possible Mazda tranny erplacement, I'd check out the H5M-R (the RX-7 tranny of FWD) found on 1G GT's and 1G Probe LX V6's... actually, you would want the PLX V6 varient because of the inverted starter position and somewhat similar bellcase. The 4cyl bellcase is all wrong for the V6 (starter in the back, pointing in the wrong direction). The tranny mount does apparently line up into the 2nd gen, drivers side mount cradle (as seen with FRCFED's FE3 to 2G install) The PLX trannys are a bit rare, and this conversion will most likely require hybrid driveshafts, switching around half the CV joint that goes into the diff because i believe there are more splines and the 1G GT driveshafts are larger.... I havent looked into it very much at all... I have had a PLX tranny and the bellcase info is based on memory. The gear ratios on that box are SWEET too!! but from what I know, it might be doable, and a lot less expensive than a custom gearbox.

Yea the 323 GTX used it, albeit a different varient. Torque capacity is about the same, which is why a lot of the "more than stock" boosted 323 guys crack trannys and get pissed.. When I swapped out PLX ratios into my old GT gearbox (and retained the 4.105 final) It cost me 700cdn to buy that PLX tranny... but this is in Toronto. Luckily I put GT ratios back into the PLX box, and left it with its 3.85 final and returned it :P whoever bought it would never know the difference .. but I kinda wished i kept that 3.85 final ratio now. oh well :spin:

Maybe I have a freak tranny. Because I've been racing using mine for a while now, both drag and track. And it's still fine. Oh yeah... and it has over 400,000 miles on it. You could get the gears cryo treated maybe?
veltpak6
December 8th, 2004, 04:30 PM
I doubt cryo will help much. Cryogenic treating helps even any pressures caused by uneven cooling during the casting process... which really just helps prevent warping under extreme temerpatures. See its not nessecarily the engine torque that really does these things in, its shock loading. Exact same reason pneumatic impact guns work better than ratchets in breaking bolts loose. People with stiff ass clutches, grippy tires and torquey engines and a willingness to pop the clutch or powershift will break gears. For that split second that theres over (totally random figure) 1400ft/lbs of force is all thats needed to wreck shit. and if the tires dont break loose then... ur sol. A light flywheel will help increase that threshold (because there would be less inertia to transfer suddenly) and you could probably shift a lot harsher if you wanted to. If youre going to subject your transmission to these things, ATF, even redline MTL is NOT what you want in there, I dont care if the every page of the EDIT: Probe (not MX6 :P) manual says it! ATF is, and always will perform better as a hydraulic fluid and NOT an Exreme Pressure lubricant. A relatively heavy gear oil with sulphur/phosphorus EP additives is what you're best off with!!
(and for those worried about sulphurs reaction with brass synchs, the "corrosion" is negligable)

Finally someone that knows who they're talking about! ( u too rob, u always got good products and i hear ya on the price on everything...maybe u could do them to special order or something?) but thats what the truth is, driving hard will wreck ur stuff, but theres a reason we put those stiff clutches, liighter flywheels etc in.. we want to go fast, and we need a tranny that can support it =)
