Okay, solely for statistical purposes, how often have/do you guys with ZE's (or ZE heads even) hit the limiter? I did today again in the heat of the moment and now I'm worried. :dizzy:

Maybe four or five times in the last two months, so far so good.

One time when the throttle cable got stuck open, I bounced off it 3 or times before turning the key off.
At the track, I shift at 7,000.
This was with the stock ze valve train. I have interprep springs in now, but haven't driven the car yet to enjoy them. :(

well, my limiter is at 7300rpm, but I don't hit it ever.
7000rpm though, i hit probably once or twice a day. for the past two years.... so roughly around 700 times. One time, Florida Mike shifted my car from redline in 3rd, to 2nd gear, and let go of the clutch. so my engine has seen 9000rpm.

I have never ever hit it, I have maybe hit 7,000 15 times in the 5 years I have had my car.

a few times, with an aluminum flywheel it jumps up there so quick

i lost traction during a launch and bounced off the limiter while i was focused on re-gaining control. so once. but i hit 7000rpm at least once a week! :D

so basically its really safe to hit 7000 cause there no power past there anyways?

the rev limiter is 7,300 on the ze right, and 6,900 on the KL03??

March 17th, 2006, 10:17 AM
KLDE redlines at 7,000 so no the rev limit is not 6900, IIRC they are like 7500 DE and 7800 ZE but thats a guss fomr memory and most likely wrong, but hopefully close

well I'm suddenly less worried about it now :D

I shifted at the track last night at an indicated ~7400 4 times... I've bounced 2 or 3 times, it's kinda hard to tell with the KL. My dad's Nissan LITERALLY bounces, the entire car bounces lol.

My stock tach reads near 8k for the rev-limit...its highly inaccurate.
I use an aftermarket tach for my shift points. I have it set at 7,000 because my reflexes are slow and the revs rise quickly with the aluminum flywheel, so it ends up being I shift just before the 7250 limit.

Well.....Mine doesn't have a rev limiter, but I can say that the valves start to float at 9000. I shift at 7800-8000

RepoMan are you talking about an engine with a stock ZE valvetrain?? :o merciful heavens!

depends on the ecu your using. Ive actually never hit it in this car and gone to 7500 just dont see a reason to go further. If Im not pullin by then Ive lost and wont blow up my engine for a loss lol

I think it would help if the rpms posted are from reading a stock tach or an aftermarket one. :!

Probably :eh: My stock tach's actually really accurate though, redlines are exactly where they're supposed to be, unless my tach and speedo are both off to the same degree:bs:

if you're shifting at 7400 with the stock rev limit set, I'd say its not accurate. :)

word. 7400 on my tach is about 6900ish actual RPM

i've hit rev limiter at 8200 rpm but you wont make any power after 6800 rpms stock so you might aswell shift at 7k if your racing

Do you have the stock rev limiter raised? ;)

7000rpm on my tach is about 6800rpm in reality.
My engine sees 7000 on the tach daily, no problems at all.

my 96 has hit it a few times i shift at 7k normally but first when i gutted it it suprised me on a lunch and my 3rd gear gives me problems going in some times... so a few times on a missed shift

My ze never sees over 6800-6900(aftermarket tach) because I'm smart.

I have a 94 pgt motor in my 93 mx-3. i have the fidanza flywheel and my tach is very accurate. Its no ze motor but on the pgt motor i have it doesnt bounce at all! I hit fuel cut hard at 8200 but i have never had it bounce for a rev limiter! Anyone know why that would be the case since it seems like everyone else has limiters!?

March 19th, 2006, 11:34 AM
^^^ because the tach is inaccurate and you haven't actually reached the rev limit yet.
unless you modify the ecu, we all have the same fuel cut.

I have bounced the ZE off the limiter a few times, but I usually shift around 7000 rpms or so on a stock tach, which is definately off (I know so because I have the MSD switches for the vris and they both have a tach.). No biggie. As far as the old DE I used to have....well, that thing has seem prolly 9000 rpms or so. Thats one of the reasons I needed to install a ZE....:D

Ok well i cant take my ZE past 5000-5500 becuz of i think its my ECTS=Engine coolant temperature sensor. I am hoping to get it fixed befor the cams and built ZE heads go in.....

i usually try to shift right before revv limiter...i mean i beat on it sometimes..but dont worry about it..taking my ze up high sets me up really good for the next gear...i've beaten cars that i should never have.....

I have my ZE limited at 7400 (accurate with autometer tach) and I don't hit it. I do however run it to 7k all day long with no hesitation. I don't even mind hanging out at 6 - 6.5k for a while if needed (especially racing on a track). Same thing with my DE, except I shift at indicated 7400 on stock tach which is actually 7000 verified thru megasquirt.

don't be worried at all, i've been hitting it daily for almost 3 years now with no problems...usually only in first gear though, it's so damn short, so hitting it once is nothing to worry about

yeah only bounced off my rev limiter a few times and it is aroun 8200, my tach and speedometer are both acurate and did not raise my rev limiter. but my car has seen higher revs than that when i missed a shift I buried the needle so that it was pointing completely to the bottom of the tach probably 9000 or more and still the engine runs strong.:) :twothumbs

60' are always high 2.0's and low 2.1's it has klze pacesetter headers, 2.5" crush bent catback, 2.5" cat, cai, 65mm tb, rr racing mounts, fidanza and cm1 and an safc for tuning, and suspension techniques springs, illuminas, and fd wheels with 225-40-16 tires on the front for a tighter gear ratio, oh and a pgt tranny for even tighter gear ratio in my mx6

Unfortunately I don't know the whole history on my engine. I just know that it runs abnormally fast for a probe. It pulls hard all the way to 8000.

I'm probably one of the few people that run a J-spec KLZE motor, ECU and wiring loom. My stock tach seems very accurate. My stock limiter is at ~7,800-7,900rpm, which with my gearing should be and is about 125kph (~77mph) in 2nd.
I rev to 7,000rpm quite often, 7,500rpm nearly as often, and to the limiter every now and again. It has been to the limiter many times over the last few years, and doesn't mind. If it wasn't safe for the motor to rev that high than Mazda would have set the limiter lower.

obd2 ecu is 7500 just like all the rest of them, if you're seeing different your tach is off, the stock tach is a piece of garbage

I believe theres a way to adjust the tach, at least there seems to be an adjustment on the mx6 tach, behind the guage face. noticed it a while back while disassembling a guage cluster. The tach in the 323 is dead on... 7500@fuel cut, looks more like 7450 to be honest (and yes, I bouced the ZE again to check it out) thanks for the encouraging words!

Yeah i noticed...on my friends Probe GT his rev limter is 7500, but yet his tach read a lil past 8,000 beofre actually hitting his 7500 RPM. and my MX-6 is dead on and hits 7500 RPM on the tach and is right on. My Mx-3 is the same way 7500 on the tach and its "hello, rev limiter" and my MX-3 is running a KL-36 ECU
