View Full Version : ACT vs. Clutchmasters

My other problem beyond the brake post. I put 156,000 miles on the original stock clutch, I now have 183,600 with the replacement clutch a Centerforce dual friction. Either I broke a motor mount or the clutch sucks, but it does'nt have the grip like when it was first installed, beyond grip, the concern is if I push it hard it grabs, but the car shudders versus chirping the tires. I searched and came to the conclusion that the ACT II was the way to go, but the shop I was pricing parts stated the clutchmasters 1 with clutchmasters lightened flywheel was the way to go for upgrade and longevity. So which clutch will give performance and more than 27,500 miles (aka CF DF). And for flywheels, fidanza, mueller, SSG?

ACT street disc/1600# pressure plate rocks!
It really should have been equipped stock.
Yes, the pedal pressure is greater, but our stock pedal pressure was too soft anyways compared to other cars I've driven.
Very streetable, plenty of bite[enough to bark 4th in my setup ], and long lasting.
I just took my tranny off and while it was off I inspected my Clutch.
After 10k miles with little or no break in it looks like new.

Thanks for the information and part numbers, I'm leaning towards the ACT. I looked at your site for a few minutes. I will check it out later this evening. Are you running with a lightened flywheel?

Get the ACT street setup. Lightened flywheels like the Clutch Master aren't really worth the money. Just have the stock flywheel resurfaced.

did you break in the CDF ? i had it for 40k in my 95 pgt and never had a problem with it. sometimes it'll make the front end hop when grabbing gears instead of straight tire spin. the clutch is fine. you may wanna check motor mounts though...at that mileage they may need replacing.
1 way to end the front end hop is to lower the front tire pressure to around 26 psi ...thats what some do at the track.

When you say you barked 4th you must have some 15's with some not so great tires huh?
When I put my 18's on with Michelin Pilot Sports I cant even chirp second! These tires are so sticky that the whole car just jerks, instead of chirp (which I think is a good thing...more traction) I also have pretty solid motor mounts.....
Well, your car is lighter too

The STAGE I Clutchmasters is better than the ACT I. They both use a stiffer pressure plate, and an organic disk, BUT Clutchmasters uses a stainless steel backing plate on their organic disk and ACT does not.
I am fairly certain that ACT is solid organic.
The backing plate on the Clutchmasters acts like a heat sink for heat generated at the disk surface.
Clutchmasters STAGE II Kevlar clutch has the same holding torque as the STAGE I, but is supposed to have at least double the life.

Incidentally, Clutchmasters now gets their aluminum flywheel from Fidanza.

My impression was that the sourcing of Fidanza is fairly recent. The exact quote I got from Clutchmasters was "with what Fidanza charges for their flywheels, its not worth for me to make my own, I can just get it from them."
