Phenolic resin in tube form

Screw ABS, I've discovered phenolic resin in tube form. $10 a foot. Not bad I dont think. Anyone messed with doing something like this yet? Some one has to have...

I forgot how it's made. Some one want to explain it again? I know it's a liquid at some point. And mixed with something else?

One more random thought. What if you had a tub of phenolic resin in it's liquid form, then diped an intake manifold in it?... Hmmm?

what are you hinting doing with it? downpipe for an intake i assume? doesnt ceramic coating do the same thing basically as phenolic plastic?

I think a tube of phenolic would be WAY more effective than a ceramic coated steel pipe. And cheaper too. Not quite as good looking though.

1/4" thick stuff that is SUPER non-heat conducting versus 1/16th" (?) of steel with a thing coating...?

Darin has said he belives that ABS is the best stuff to use. But, I dont' think anyone would argue that phenolic would even be a step above that. :smile:

Stupid question, but how would one go about making the downpipe? Obviously a mold, but how would it be done? For some reason I keep thinking of how one greases a cake pan, but I'm pretty sure butter isn't going to be involved here.

Well, "one" wouldn't be making it. It's done. I found places that sell it pre made. As for bends? I didn't even see if that was availble. If not, I can use ABS bends. No biggie. If I can I'll send a design to the company and have it custom made to bend where I want. I don't see that very possible unless I had a bunch made.

The best release agent I've found (criteria to meet are cheap and simple) is to mix soap shavings in water ina spray bottle. spray on the mould and polish with a cloth. Do this several times. I've used this to produce carbon fibre and fibreglass bits.

I believe there are two types of "formed" phenolic plastics. One uses layers of cloth weave (this is what I use to make my spacers), the other is a "paper pulp". Don't ask, Ive never used it.....

Plastic tubing is often made by the process of extruding. Many Playdooh kits have an extruder attachment.

I have an HP book on fiberglass and other composite material. Only touches briefly on phenolic, little on PVC, and none on ABS.
