I know along time ago I read something about homemade sts's, but I searched and didnt find it.

What all comes with a sts kit? Ist it just a different bar that is shorter? If thats the case, why not just cut the stock bar?

nope u off .. the ball is moved on it u can do it to stock but u have to cut it and then weld it. Prd my recomendation man if ya wana see it let me know im close to ya.

What 'ball' are you talking about? The shift knob?

(sorry Im dumb :) )

I just figured you could slice the lever then put the shift knob back on top.... sounds good at least......

slicing at the top wont do anything. The STS's design is that is it shorter up top above the pivot ball and longer below. cutting the top will only make it look shorter...just buy one, great mod

my friend tells me that has nothing to do with it.
If you cut it and put the ball back on, its gonna be shorter throw.

Think about it.....

there was a HUGE discussion about just cutting the top. search for it and youll get the answer that it doesnt do shit mechanically.

to do a real sts, you have to cut some from the top, and weld it to the bottom.

like in this pic of the one i had made

IMO, "short throw" is just a widely mis-used term - some use it to mean a "shorter shift stick". A shorter shift stick, mechanically will reduce the distance your hand travels to shift, but that's not the essence of a "short throw".

A "real" shortened throw reduces the ANGULAR change - you can change the length of the shifter above the fulcrum all you want plus or minus, but the angular distance will remain the same. By changing the length of the shifter between the fulcrum and the "load" is where you have the ability to reduce the angular distance. By increasing the length here, you can (for example) reduce the angular distance required to move the load 3 inches from 40 degrees to only 25 degrees (fictitious figures don't apply to the PGT). Combine this with a reduced shifter length between the fulcrum and the knob and you significantly reduce the amount of motion your hand requires to shift.

Perhaps a diagram is in order here.. hard to explain without creating a bunch of hard to-read verbal slop. (if a mod can enables images?)
http://www.probeparts.com/gallery/graphics/temp/short_throw.gif

The green level shows the original length of the shifter below the fulcrum and the green angles show the angular distance traveled top & bottom. For the same distance travelled on the bottom, the red shows that twice the length between the fulcrum and the bottom decreases the angular ditance by 50%.

The blue level approximates where one might try to reduce the length of the shifter above the fulcrum. Where the blue line intercepts the green shows that the distance travelled on the top side is only reduced by around 20% without increasing the below-fulcrum length.

Ah well.. HTH

man enough of this mombo jombo crap...let me put it to you in english terms....if you make the shifter shorter....it does shit! It still takes the same time to shift to the gear. Same distance to engage! The only reason why people cut it is for APPEARANCE only! If they tell you other wise they are dumbass'. Now a Short THROW shifter shortens the throw. I.e you move the actual shifter LESS distance to engagement hence quicker shifts :) Quicker shifts = faster 1/4 mile times. Basically alot less effort is needed to shift. Just get the PRD STS....it was well worth IMO. It makes driving more fun.

WORD!! Exactly, cutting it is for looks, moving the ball is for short shifts.

the snow came down cold an wet...

I had to shovel the 4.5inchs that I got in my yard an driveway... What a pain....

It was warmer when I was doing soo... SO it made shoveling much harder... it was like ...slushy heavey ....snow....

it might have been better if it rained...

Now its all slippery as a MOFO....

:wtf:

It snowed here to. Cleared up and then iced over that night. Slippery as hell. Thought if I had cut the handle portion of my snow shovel it might make shoveling faster. Didn't work though. Made it harder. Then I went inside, ate chessy poofs and soaked my feet in kitty urine.

ok, thanks for clearing this up for me!
