  • Megasquirt Acquisition Information

The Megasquirt by Bruce Bowling and Al Grippo is one of the probe communities stand alone solutions.

Information on the megasquirt can be found at the official bruce and al site at

    http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html

More information on tuning and developments including new code updates and more can be found online at

It can be purchased in a variety of fashions.

    1. Components form.

This method of purchasing involves gathering the individual components and building the megasquirt yourself.

You will need to purchase the Printed circuit board from here, then order the remaining electronics components from http://www.digikey.com. A full list of all the electronics components necessary from digikey can be found here. After this you can either purchase a LMB heeger EAS-300 case from digikey.com, mouser.com, or lmbheeger.com.

The complete assembly guide with step by step instructions can be found on the Megasquirt website in .pdf format to help you with assembly. If you have any trouble there is support online at http://msefi.com, as well as this forum. (More probers are becoming experienced with megasquirt. I do not know of a single question that couldn't be answered between the two forums.)

Assembly is not difficult and there is an online guide for beginners. I would recommend this method for most because building the unit yourself saves money and leaves you with a better understanding of how it works.

    2. Kit form.

The second method of purchasing megasquirts is in kit form from Glen's Garage. (website)

This method is perhaps the easiest method for those that wish to build the unit themselves without the hastle of gathering all of the parts from various suppliers.

The kit includes EVERY component needed to build your megasquirt, in a labeled bag. Assembly is easier than putting together puzzle. You simply take a component out of a seperate bag labeled "C 11" (Example) and solder the component into the "C 11" spot on the megasquirt printed circuit board. Each components position on the board is very clearly labeled leaving the board no more difficult to complete than a "paint by numbers" book.

The kit is topped off with CNC machined end plates with flares at the bottom and pre-drilled mounting holes.

Again all assembly information can be found on the megasquirt website or msefi.com.

    3. Pre-Assembled Units

There are multiple places online to acquire pre-built megasquirt units, you can purchase pre-built megasquirts from PRd who is an authorized ProbeTalk Vendor or in the occasional bulk buys.

And as always, anyone interested in acquiring a megasquirt can feel free to ask me any questions they wish.

I bought my megasquirt from glens garage, it took about 2 weeks to ship. Bags were neatly labled and overall I thought it was a straightforward assembly. It took about 2 weeks to recieve my megasquirt.

apparently I can't link to glens garage for some reason, but other links like www.jcwhitney.com work, just do a google search for glens site

yea, good products, but you're not the only person who has waited that long, he's certainly slow, but he always eventually delivers

My first GG kit took 44 days to arrive and I too was promised I'd have it over a month beforehand.

Glen's a great guy, once you DO get the kit you'll be happy with it. Sometimes you'll even wait a month for the Bowling and Grippo parts themselves. This is why I started ordering them well ahead of time, in batches...

GLens Garage also includes a PCB... it's the whole Digi Key and B&G orders put together for you. Are you building a second megasquirt, or will you have spare parts? The digi key stuff only takes a day or two.

For those building thier first MS, I think glens kit is the way to go. Everything is fantastically labled/seperated and provided you can read instructions....almost fool proof really. So, IMO, it is worth the wait.....

Yes, definately worth the wait. Sorry to hear it is taking so long though. You kinda have to understand his situation. He doesn't make much money off the kit, and it is definately not his primary job. Plus he has a family. The detail he puts into his kit has to take some time, and he occasionally has to wait for suppliers (like case manufacturers) in order to fill orders. Not only that, he sells A LOT of these kits. When you do get the kit, and add the components up seperately, you'll be amazed he even bothers with it. But, we're all glad he does.

                            Guys check out
This guy seems to stock the kits better than glen can, meaning more readily available. I just ordered an unassembled kit + case + shipping for $181.
