Primary Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

This explains how to replace your Primary Shaft Oil Seal. This How To assumes you already went through the Teardown How To, and should now have a Clutch Housing Case that looks like this:

The Primary Shaft Oil Seal is on the top left, next to the breather tube.

You don’t have to unbolt the breather tube, but it does make it easier. Note that there is a gasket under it, so if you tear it, replace it or make a new one.

Let’s do this!!!!

With a small flat head, GENTLY wiggle the outer race. This race is NOT pressed in, but is in there tight. You may even be able to just use your fingers to rotate and pull to get it to come out. Do not scratch the inside of the race.

With the race out, pry out the old seal, making sure to use the groove in the side of the housing like in the pic. I also used a couple of paper towels as extra padding. Don’t scratch the sides of the housing that come in contact with the seal!

Grab your new seal and oil up the outside parts. Place it inside the housing and push it in some. You won’t be able to push it in all the way by hand, so just make sure that you get it straight. Get a socket that is as close to the diameter of the seal as possible and place it on top of the seal. Now tap it in. Don’t just hammer away at the same spot, move around. The seal may tip a little on you, but that’s OK. Just tap in the other side a little and you will be back on track.

Time to put the outer race back in. Again, this race isn’t pressed in, but it is snug. Line it up by hand and then firmly push it down using your palm. If it gets stuck, don’t ram it in and DON’T hammer it in. Just take it back out and try again.

You are done!
