  • REVIEW: Turtle Wax - Black Box

I wrote this up on my Escape forums and just copied/pasted it here. I wanted to let anyone with a Black/Dark Probe to know what's up, so, enjoy.

    /////////////////////////////

So with my Escape being blacked out, I went out to do my first wax because some lines and junk were killing me. Went to Autozone and checked out what's hot these days... one box caught my eye because it looked like it was made specifically for black cars... it was. I bought it and here is my review:

^ This is what the box looks like.

    ^ Has (4) bottles, (2) applicators, (1) top-spray thingy.
-Step-1 Pre-wax conditioner (first note, stuff is very black): It says its supposed to prep the surface or something and fill in scratches. I used one applicator to apply this to my entire surface until it 'hazed' as the box said. Let me my first remark to Turtle Wax... THE SPRAY TOP SUX!!!! It is obviously from the makers for Windex, for spraying watery stuff, not thick-ass goo! I got one good spray out of it before it got stuck on the 'down' position. So my recommendation is to just dab the bottle against the applicator and go.

-Detailer (thin, black cleaner): I used a microfiber terry cloth and sprayed the 'Detailer' over the hardened conditioner to remove and smooth it out. Again, this stuff is black too. I immediately noticed small scratches being covered up from the initial conditioner. Bigger scratches (that were white) were not fully covered, but were being filled and 'tinting' the before, bright white scratch. I was satisfied with this.

-Step-2 Wax (deep black goo): This stuff was thinner and the conditioner and easier and quicker to apply all around. BUT, once hardened was very difficult to get off (that, or your arms/fingers are so tired at this point that it feels tougher).

-Detailer (second time): Cleans up the wax.

^ Waxing process (sorry for the crappy pics. I was in a low-light garage and only had my camera phone)

^ Finished. (again, sorry... shoulda drove it outside to really show the shine)

Conclusion: I would give this product a 4/5 stars. All the lines and swirls were smooth and covered now. Scratches were filled and 'tinted' if they had any color to blend it in. The Step-1 conditioner seemed to do most of the work... the Step-2 wax seemed to be just a glosser to give it all a good ending shine. Took me less than 2hrs (i think, i wasn't timing myself). Ummm, so if you have a black car, or maybe really dark blue, I would recommend this wax.

On a side note, this Meguiar's chrome rim stuff is not worthy of a good review or further typing from my fingers. The ArmorAll Extreme tire shine is SUPPOSED to last the longest... it's pretty thick and seems good, but I'm sure most would be happy with their regular tire-shine.

Hmmm, this stuff sounds like it might be a cool thing to try on my black pgt. I'll wait till you see if it washes off in 1 rain/wash.

How much did that box cost anyways?

Nice truck, love the blacked out look, just like my probe

thank you for the kind words Sir. The box was $20, which I thought was reasonable.

Clay bar was the best thing I used so far.

clay bars are good preps for wax, as they grab years and years of grim and microscopic particles from your paint. I used the blue one w/ the guy who looks like Gumby on the box.

So how did the black box stuff hold up? One rain and it all washed off? How many washes did you get from a box, just one use?

I saw it the other day and was going to pick it up but I remembered this thread and wondered if it was worth my $25...

Thanks for any feedback on it

so since i bought my car last year i've been scared to use any of the polishes/waxed on account of the birds feet scratches or cracks in the paint on my hood and headlights... will these types of products make these types of issues better or worse... i would hate to try and make my car better and ultimately destroy the paint...anyone ever try something like these products on those types of cracks in the paint or is it just a waste of money since my car otherwise looks great from about 5-10 feet away...lol

the idiot who owned the car before me paint the roof and the A-pillars only, and the roof has devloped some (I think what your refering to birds feet) slight cracks but the paint is not peelings, it looks as if its under the clear? Im not sure, but I still wash and wax the car once a week.

My dad was saying that the wax will help protect it from getting worse. I dont know if this is the same problem you have but from my knowledge and his, wax helps protect the paint job.

As for the black box products, Im not sure. It has carnuba (spelt wrong lol) wax in it, so I would assume its okay for it.

this is an example of what NOT to put in a product review.

it's not hard to be a bit more articulate in your choice of words. explain why the item "sucks balls" or better yet, provide a review on that product that shows us why.

Sorry for the late update, but about a month later (2 rain days and a car wash) the swirls are showing and the smooth touch is fading. I am not going through the manual hand-wax trouble, but at the same time I'm not going to throw away the box. I liked the shine it gave and if you have a garage-kept sports car or something, this wax would be good to last... but not for my daily commuter. I will either borrow someones rotating buffer or buy my own to use this again, but I think most people will be happy with their regular wax.

As for my side notes, they are edited now so feel free to continue your moderation duties.

I've used couple of these black boxes to my PGT in couple years.
                            Short review:

Turtle Wax - The Black Box set

                            Pros
                            + A complete set from pre-wax to a long-life wax with guide
+ Sufficient wax, you need to apply it less than for example original Turtle Wax
+ Excellent for black Probe. After two times of washing and waxing the car it had given my old paint a fresh look.

                            Cons
                            - You might run out of pre-wax after one wax (and still have enough wax for 3 times)
                            - Applicators are small, it's best to use a rag / cotton / polisher
                            - The black wax colors everything; if you have stickers or badges on the car, you have to be very careful with them. For example I took out my front Ford badge to get a solid wax surface under it

                            Conclusion
The Black Box did what it said it would do. It gave a great, semi-long lasting shine to the car. After 3-4 washes I wanted to wax the car again, but IIRC after the second wax I didn't have to wax the car again for at least 5 washes.
Depending on the amount of wax used during waxing, the bottle should last for 3-4 waxes.
When applying the stuff you need to be very careful if you don't want to have black spots on rear quarter window seal or our chrome Ford and Probe badges. If you want to do the thing properly, I highly suggest removing your tail lights and Ford badges. This way you get a nice and solid surface of this stuff without worrying about coloring the parts.

                            On the other hand...
I wasn't so convinced about the product. I think I got even better results with original Turtle Wax or with a domestic carnauba wax. The Black Box costs almost 30€ here and having in mind you can always use a regular pressure washer soap to wash the car (costs like 0.25€ per litre) and then apply normal wax to it, the black box -products sound like much more work with all pre-wax and detailing fluids, and it's more expensive.

                            Rating: 2.5 out of 5

Here's a good photo of the shine after the second wax.

I can totally respect that review. It does give a semi-gloss finish that last only a little while. The small applicator makes me want to use a automatic buffer next time.
