            • Wow, found out what happened to Heather's van tonight...The previous owner put never seize on the caliper bolts. I had them torqued to ~60lb ft, and the top caliper bolt managed to back out on the passenger side, causing the caliper to drag along the inside of the wheel.

Luckily I just went down to Garys and pulled a few new (well, used) caliper bolts. I made sure these ones were clean. Seriously though, WHO DOES THAT?

              • The newest addition to the stable...

If all goes according to plan I'll be picking this up on Sat.

                Yes, it'll have the RX-8's.

calipar mounting bolt or calipar bracket bolts? i always put it on the bracket bolts, and regular grease on the calipar bolts...if i feel its nesc. depends on the condition of them, if they were showing signs of possibly rusting solid.

                      I do.

Is that how much you paid for it Ant? Not a bad price. Mine was that after the warranty and everything with only 8K miles on it 2 years ago though

                      • Well, I'd HIGHLY advise those that are putting that sh*t on caliper mounting bolts to stop...Because I've easily (and I mean EASILY) done well over 100 brake jobs in my life, and this has NEVER happened to me before. The only common denominator here was never seize. Those bolts were ****ing TIGHT when I put everything back together. I was in shock when I pulled the wheel off and found a missing caliper bolt. The only other thing to note here, I suppose, is the fact that Pontiac uses a spacer for the caliper mounting bolts. I guess it's possible that the spacer may have somehow caused the bolt to back out, though I doubt it...From what my Dad told me you always want to use the blue loctite on the mounting bolts, although I've NEVER had to do this...I've always just torqued them down to a little over factory specs...never had one problem in the past.

Ant, congrats on the new purchase!!!

                          • I imagine loctite might work the same and ... it won't back out.

                            But I haven't used loctite.

My avenger did the same thing one time, except i lost a bolt and went to the local napa and got one to fit. But that same night i noticed a horrid noise, luckily for me i had some 18's so the caliper didn't destroy my wheels on the way home. Pretty sure i loaded it up with some Teflon tape and it stayed after that.

Neither had I, until 2 days ago. You've been warned! Surely loctite would solidify things, but it's really unnecessary, IMHO.

And I didn't even put the never seize on there...All I did was install rotors and torque everything back down to spec. The previous owner mentioned doing the brakes (pads) very shortly before putting the van up for sale, so this would have happened over time, regardless.
