  • 2nd Gen road race setup

Hey guys, I'm new to the Probe forums and need to get my first 15 posts so I can post pics, PM, and post to some of the interesting forums. So I figured I would post some history I have with my current 626 LeMons/Chump car. I bought a '94 Probe and will be switching to that chassis later this year. I will start with the current setup on my 626 on the Probe and tune from there.

The easiest way to catch you up on what I have done on the 626 to date is to point you to the build thread on the mazda626.net forums.

Welcome! I race a 95 Probe in LeMons. We're running our fourth race tomorrow at Gingerman.

I've read some of your 626 forum posts ( 50 pages! ), and I don't think there's much I could add to help you out. Nice build! In fact, I'm sure I'll be hitting you up for info!

Our car is completely stock engine-wise. We're running Tein-S springs and Stagg struts, on otherwise stock components ( no different sway bars, etc ). Falken Azenis on stock rims. That's about it for enhancements. Our first race was on original worn-out struts and crappy Kuhmo all-seasons that came with the car when we bought it, and the new set-up is worlds better. I'm sure we can get more out of the suspension, and we'll get around to it, eventually!

Looking forward to reading about your adventures. -- Mark J.

Forgot something -- we're using Mazda6 front rotors and calipers.

A quick summary of my current setup:

        98+ 626 rear sway bar (17mm)
Sachs Super Touring Struts from RockAuto
Megan Racing MX-6 Lowering Springs (Cheap but better than trying to cut the factory tapered springs)
Heim joints pieced together from McMaster Carr for front/rear sway bar links
Fresh wheel bearings all the way around (8 races old now)
Cheap front lower control arms/ball joints/bushings from RockAuto
Cheap rear OEM equivalent sway bar bushings from RockAuto

De-powered steering rack, looped lines at the piston body and valve body.

        Dunlop Direzza ZII's
        17x7 Konig Zero-In Wheels

        Mazda Speed 6 front rotors/brackets/calipers/pads
        626 98+ rear rotors/brackets/calipers/pads
Raybestos Advanced Technology rotors all the way around
        Hawk DTC-60 pads up front
Hawk HP+ pads in the rear
        626 braided brake lines
        Motul 600 brake fluid

The motor and anything else I haven't mentioned are stock or OEM equivalent. Basically replacing things as they break with cheap parts from RockAuto

Your tire and brake set up really cant be beat. Cant wait to see the lap differences once you change it up to the probe chassis.

Monoxide, I expect no differences at all. The cars weigh the same and the wheel base on the Probe is only 1"-2"s shorter. I doubt we hardly even notice we are driving a different car. Until, we pull into the paddock pop that Lambo door and score all the honey's in sight :-)

Actually, the Lambo hinges are pretty heavy. So I expect the Probe is heavier than our 626.

Have you actually measured each car cent of hub to center of hub? Me and Pile of RD1 got wondering, and decided to find out. His 97 pgt to my 97 626, his pgt was like an inch longer. He won that argument that day, and i still have no clue how that works.

I haven't measured. But it doesn't surprise me. I expect both cars to feel exactly the same.

Nice suspension set-up. Were the MazdaSpeed front rotors bolt-on?

Yes, they are bolt on. Just required the rotors, calipers, and brackets. The brackets were the hardest part to find and the most expensive. I ended up buying those directly from Mazda. Since it was a one time expense, it wasn't too bad.

I used the standard 626 flex lines. I assume they are the same as the Probe's.
