  • 91 Probe GT Resto Mod Build

At first I bought a 90 GT that looked decent on the out side but once under the car I found 2 gaping holes where the rear trailing arms hook into the body thus making her non road worthy.

After finding that out I began the search for a decent clean shell that I could swap all the 90' parts into. Upon receiving a PM on another forum I made the trip to Virginia to pick up my 91 GT that I'm in the process of restoring/modding.

Once the car arrived home the long process began of tearing the car apart and starting the long process of sanding and painting. It took me about a month and a half to tear the car down and strip the paint down (thanks to my work schedule).

As of last night 09/08/13 at 9pm I was finally able to lay down the first coat of sealer primer onto the body. I still have other parts that need to be sanded down before they can be primed but I needed to get the body primed since I had some spots of bear metal showing.

The 90 GT parts car (looks can be deceiving):

    The 91 GT:

How she sat for about a month before making any real progress:

What happens when a car isn't properly prepped for a new paint job (peels off with a razor blade):

    The rust repair:

How she sits right now. Under the car cover in the background is the other project that I'm working on. It's a 2000 Saleen S281 Supercharged that had an interior fire (also being restored to original):

That's all for now. A few to many pics for a first build thread post but I'll update this as I make more progress.

Nice progress. Me and my dad tried to fix rust on our Merc E320 and repaint and we failed miserably

We got new fenders, put epoxy primer on then painted and it looked horrible ;(!

      If you don't mind asking you some questions about painting;
What do you suggest for good sand paper and blocks?

      Good luck with your project.

@short4stuff: I like the first gen more than the second only cause they came factory turbo so its a lot less work in the long run.

@Husam2012: I used a mix of 80 and 120 grit to get the paint broke down smooth. As far as blocks go I'm not sure what I was using. I can find out tho cause I'm using all my uncles supplies to do the work. I also went to Lowes and bought a 120 grit sanding sponge made for drywall and wrapped a piece of sand paper around it to do some of the curved areas (fenders and rear quarters).

@B-Ball: If your gonna do the work you should do it right the first time. Not baggin on ya in any way but why put in the effort with street signs when you could use sheet metal and not have to worry about taking it back out again.

@Jmalonejr93gt: Thanks for the encouragement. It's a project is how I look at it and it takes up my spare time when I'm not working. This should get updated pretty often since I work mostly on the car on weekends.

WOW ! Nice 1st gen ! Are you putting the red interior from the parts car in the red one? That would be killer! I like the wheels that came on the red one too. I'll be checking in to keep an eye one this. Nice job so far

Yea when all is said and done the car will be red with a red interior lol. Odd combination but the interior of the parts car is all original minus the pillar pod that has some cheap-o gauges in it that's gonna be moved over to the middle of the dash. The wheels are second gen MX-6 wheels and they need work. The one on the drivers side front needs a gouge filled in and a few of the others need to be straightened around the outer rim to make them circular again. I'm already sourcing new wheels anyways for when the project is complete.

Red on Red isn't a definite yet. My uncle thinks I should paint it the color of my parts car which is Oxford White. I'm thinking more of a Sapphire Blue but we will see. I have a ways to go yet before I decide on what color it will be when it's done. I already have 3 different sets of wheels picked out and I'm basing the paint of them for the most part. No matter what color I go with the wheels will look good with my 3 main choices.

The place I'm getting my paint through doesn't have pearl white but they do have Arctic White. There selection of paint isn't very big but there prices are rock bottom and from the reviews I've read and the pictures I've seen its good quality paint. http://www.paintforcars.com/
