Rear Motor Mount removal/installation write-up, with pics!
Ok, first lemme say that this is a REAL PITFA especially if you are a larger person, or have large arms. My rear MM was toast! I had engine rock while in 5th gear http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_51_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_52_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_53_full.jpg TOOLS NEEDED: Jack----floor jack will work, but you’ll need something to put on top of it to jack against the tranny with, a short 2X4 will work for this. I used a bottle jack. ½” ratchet 3/8” ratchet 17mm socket, ½” drive 24-32” + of ½” extension (adds 10x the ease to the job 10mm deep well 3/8 drive socket Jack stands ½” universal (yet another tool that will make this job a lot easier) SUPLIES NEEDED: A LOT of chill pills Step #1 Jack up the car and support with the jack stands. Remove the CAI From the TB forward. Those with Cruise may have to remove the cruise control cable. Step#2 Remove the drivers side splash shield. Take the bottle jack and jack up the tranny enough to alleviate the pressure on the front Motor Mount. (yet another small side job that takes 5 min and in all makes the job easier and shorter to do). Step#3 Now here is a little trick I learned while doing this job. Take the 24-32” of extensions, put the 17mm socket on the end of them, and insert them through the pass side wheel @ about 9 O’clock on the wheel. Look through the wheel and guide the socket in and put it on the MM through bolt (one that goes through the MM). Now while watching the bolt/nut from the pass side (it can be seen while standing up and looking behind the intake from the pass side of the car.) loosen the nut up. http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_54_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_55_full.jpg Step#4 Take the 10mm deep well socket and the 3/8’s ratchet and remove the 2 nuts that hold the electrical wiring to the firewall. Once removed, pull the wiring off the bolts and push it forward. (kind of a PITA to do). http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_56_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_57_full.jpg Step#5 Take the jack and put it under the rear of the tranny, and put some up pressure on the tranny to hold it in place as you remove the MM nuts/bolt. http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_58_full.jpg Step#6 Take the ½” universal and the 17mm socket and pull the nuts (2) and the bolt that hold the MM down to the sub frame. http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_59_full.jpg Step#7 As you can see once the MM through bolt’s nut has been removed along with the MM mounting nuts/bolt, the through bolt can’t be removed. As it will hit the P/S line. Simple fix. Take the jack and jack the engine/tranny up a little until the bolt will clear the line. Finally remove the though bolt. http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...71_60_full.jpg Step#8 The fun/hated/PITA step. Now with as much patience and as many valium as you have, remove the rear MM. I spent about an hour turning/twisting and just plain trying to force the *******er out of there. Step#9 Replace the old MM, or install the inserts. Step#10 Follow the above steps in reverse order and put it all back together. Enjoy! ~Aaron

Here is another *unofficial* Probetalk member of the month award. I'd say you have a good shot at the *unofficial* Probetalk member of the year award as well. VERY NICE WORK!

Wow an hour of turning and twisting to get the mount out!! Mine must have gone pretty easy. It slid right out. I didn't have to jack the tranny up. I put the inserts in the front, then did the rear. The other three support the engine and tranny pretty well.
FYI, the 93 mount is diffrent than 94 on. The poly inserts are made for the 94 on. I had to replace my rear mount to get the inserts to fit. I was able to reach everything from the top, didn't need to go in the sides. PS, Hood removal is nearly a must! Saves time and frustration! Over all, Nice job Silver. What is your Email, I have a picture of the two mounts side by side if you want to post it as well.

Too bad, if you would have searched the list back to last May, when I did mine exactly like this, you could have finished it even quicker!!
IIRC, Halfriceboy did his write up on this job back then. He took the IM off, this way doesn't need that done- a major time saver. |

That's more than likely why mine came out with such ease..... I had my IM off as well.
Still a very good write up. "A picture is worth a thousand words"

This write up ROCKS. Luckily I won't have to go through the bottom as I'll be replacing vcg's at the same time I do the rear mount (thank god) so I'll go in from the top.
Hats off to a great tutorial!

I've just removed my whole turbo system and wrapped the pipes and turbo, installed the Pheno Race kit studs, and changed both exhaust manifolds, and now am moving on to installing my RR Racing rear motor mount. Thanks for a great writeup.

btw, step 8 is about 100000 times easier if the IM is off.

Just finished doing mine. The fronts are easy but the rears...They are a major PITA if you are lazy and dont want to remove everything under the motor(like me). I did a few things different.
1. I didnt remove the rear mount. I just removed the shield part and let it sit on the steering rack. 2. Lubed up the insert and slipped it in while the mount was attached to the firewall(or whatever it was attached to). Then replaced the shield part, put the through bolt to hold the shield in place. Then went on to struggling with the 3 other mount bolts. Snugged everthing down after all the hard stuff was done. 3. Removing the shifter arm at the tranny gave me enough room to wiggle everything together.(that plus a lot of swearing) Removing the shifter arm exposed the fact that i no longer have any semblence of a bushing in there, it is just wiggling aroung like mad! And now i am mad, another stupid thing to fix(that plus the ripped CV joint boot that i also found) I have kind skinny arms so i could fit in the tight confines, and i have the cuts all over my arms to prove how tight it was. All you other bodybuilder types will be out of luck here. 4. I know it probably would have been easier if i removed the mount from the car, but for the life of me i couldnt see where it was bolted on Driving impressions: You need to slip the clutch and rev a little more off idle or the vibration will rattle the crappy ford plastic interior bits. There is a little more vibration at cold start and everyday type driving but it is not too bad. Shifting...i cant really say since i dont seem to have a shifter bushing right now. But i will try Home Depot to see if i can find some kind of nylon bushing that will fit the arm and some kind of sleeve that will keep the bolt thread from eating up the plastic bushing again. Oh well, it just never seems to end....

If your just putting in inserts there should be no need to get the mount all the way out. Just take the two bolts and one nut off that hold the mount. They are just behind it, between the fire wall and mount. With those off you can pull the mount up a little to squeeze in the inserts. I removed mine becouse I replace the mount as well.
As for the vibrations. Don't worry to much about it, it softens up. Mine doesn't vibrate anymore. Had the inserts in for about 6-8 months. Either I got used to it, or it went away.
