You serious?

It replaces your catalytic converter. You'll free up about 5hp or so. If you get a non resonated TP your exhaust will be loud as hell. If you get a resonated TP it will help keep it quiet and reduce drone until you hit high RPM's.

I have a resonated test pipe with a borla catback and it sounds pretty mean. Nice and quiet at idle and screams at high rpms. What year car do you have? For me it was a pain in the ass since I have a 97.

Actually its not more complicated for a 96 bc it has 2 o2's in the headers (after the cats in the headers) instead of one after the main cat. It doesnt have one downstream like the 97's. So it shouldnt be an issue or pull any codes like mine does.

And if you have to ask what it is I would suggest you pay somebody to put it in for you

Would it work just as well to punch out the cat instead?

My first reaction is no. Now you have a hollow chamber in to which the exhaust gasses will expand, loosing velocity, and introducing turbulence into the exhaust stream, especially as it must exit the other end, getting squeezed back into the pipe size of your choice.

However, one advantage would be the expanding of the gasses would serve to keep the exhaust quiet...and very unlikely possibility, the expansion of the gasses could have a scavenging effect, sucking out gasses from the pipe into the chamber, actually increasing efficiency, however then it still has to get out of the other end of the cat...

But to put the whole thing in perspective...If you really don't need the cat, sell the bastard, or at very least take it to a metal recycler, I get $30 average for a still mostly intact converter.

My friend has a Audi twin turbo V6 that has 2 cats, he punched them both out a few years back and gained power and has had no problems since, so if you really want to just punch them out. Although he did it because it was an integrated cat-downpipe, so just bolting in a test pipe was expensive and a pain

Oh, c'mon, Jin. You're tellin' me as a highschool senior you knew full well what a test pipe was?

That being said you coulda searched, kid.

I have a Borla + testpipe, it's really not that loud at all.

http://thumbs.streetfire.net/cbce88d...2d62afcd87.jpg1995 Ford Probe GT w/Borla and a testpipe!

Resonated test pipes really will help mellow out the sound and eliminate the rasp you get with certain additions to an exhaust.

On the subject, here's a good comparo of testpipe sound Vs Stock Cat sound. Exhaust was Ebay Headers, 2.5" manderel bends and Magnaflow 22x4" round muffler in the stock resonator location, side exit exhaust:
