  • factory amp wiring

so, just bought a brand spankin used 97 gt. It is still completely factory with only 98k on it. very virgin i might say. First thing im going to do is upgrade the audio system. I assume this car will have a factory amp for the speakers. My 2004 Jeep GC also had one. What I did is purchased a new 5 channel amp and replaced the factory amp with the new one. I used a wiring diagram to determine the speaker wires coming from the radio and attached those to my line level input. Then did the same thing for the output. Thus, I used the factory wiring for the speakers. So, i have searched for the past 5 hours on and off, but i cant find enough info on wiring colors and origin to comfortably perform this same task on the PGT. Does anyone have access to the speaker wire colors coming into the amp and going out so that i can tap them into the line level input of my new amp and then use the out to the speakers and connect them to the output of the new amp? I know there is a amp bypass harness my metra. Can i just cut that thing in half or something and use that simple color setup?

There's a lot of wire run around the car for the audio, it's old at this point, it's thin gauge. If you want it to sound good, you might as well run new wire. The rears are easy to do. Just run it under the carpet. The fronts, the proper way is to run it through the molex. There should be a thread around here for that. I wouldn't hack the old wires out, just zip tie it out of the way. I took my original amp out. It could still get wired back in if I want. You are planning on using an aftermarket hu right?

Yea, I'm going to use an aftermarket HU and amp. I probably will just use RCA wires to the amp for the speakers, but I would really like to use the speaker wire in existence. It seems like a real hassle to run new wire through the door tubes or w/e you called then. Have you ever done it?

Mine came with the fronts wired around the molex instead of through it. Not the proper way, but, it's worked fine for many years. If i have any problem i'll correct it. Starting from zero I would've run them through the molex.

Gotcha! I actually found the wiring diagram on performance probe, but I'll take a look and running better speaker wires through there like you said. If i think I can do it I will! Thanks.

I think it was 12v.com that had a video showing how to drill through the molex
