  • A sad day in Probe-ville

My 92 LX has begun shifting weird on the second upshift from a stop, so I thought I'd treat it to a nice transmission service while I was out of town last weekend. After a test drive and putting it on their scanner, though, they declined to service it. Seems that the transmission is actually slipping and servicing it might knock it out completely, sooner than it will all on its own.

They could rebuild it - at a cost of $2300+ - but that is out of my price range.

So I'm mourning the imminent death of a car I've had nearly 14 years...a car I love to drive and like the looks of.

I'm not looking forward to whatever I end up with as a replacement, because I can't afford anything. I'll end up with some tin can with horrible gas mileage and NO personality.

It's a sad day in Probe-ville....another car has a terminal diagnosis....!

That's what I need, the 3.0 auto....where in the heck do you look for something like that?

The shop - independent transmission specialists who were quoting me the rebuild price - said that just because it's older, the price doesn't necessarily go down. Considering I've got several other really-big things needing fixing, this only really works if I get the cost under $1000....

IF there are any compatible ones...I guess that's a place to start. If it's a you-pull-it, that might be tough. Lack of tools etc. I'll see what I can work out.

Thanks for the idea, though. Getting this car working for less would be more cost-effective than buying someone else's old car with unknown issues I think. For the same money, I could fix mine...or get a used car that needs fixing (by which time I'd be out of money entirely).

Sorry to hear that. I agree with the advice of the other members to search at a U-pull or Junkyard for a replacement. If you need a good replacement car for cheap...honda civic, accord or nissan sentra, mitsubishi mirage. Any of those 92- and up are pretty rock solid and cheap to fix. I had a nice Mx-6 but I sold it already.

Yeah, I saw that, Phelios! Wish I'd known a couple of months earlier.

The slipping is getting worse, so it's going to my local mechanic tomorrow. It looks like all the junkyard/used parts places around here have the same hours I have at work - so I'll let him do the calling around to find a decently-good used one. Worst-case scenario, I found one online with shipping included at $666. That dollar amount bugs me, but that looks like it's near the top of what it would cost me. With some luck, we should be able to find something locally for less. I'd love to keep this repair well under $500, even with paying shop rates for the swap-out!

Think kind thoughts for me...this week I have to re-learn how to drive a stick shift. My boyfriend is letting me borrow his jeep, and I haven't driven a stick since the late 70s.

Well, I've ended up replacing the Probe with a Jeep. So the Probe is for sale.

Nice shape, except it needs a transmission, and the battery went dead while it was sitting in my boyfriend's driveway! Strong engine, most of the parts that can be replaced or upgraded under the hood have been (A/C compressor, water pump, brake master cylinder, radiator, alternator, etc.!) Good tires with only about a year of light use on them. I think there is even an almost full tank of gas!

$750...let me know if you are interested. Currently in NE Albuquerque.

92 1st gen Probe LX hatchback, V-6 Vulcan engine 3.0 L, 6 cyl, auto transmission that needs work . Second owner...have had it since 1998. Got great gas mileage, mid 20s in town, better when everything was recently fixed, and up to 37 on the highway.

Great project car for someone with tools and the time to swap out a transmission.

I'd post photos but can't figure out how!

Hey there -I am a native New Mexican! And I have a green card! If I had a dollar for everytime I was asked "Don't you have to have a green card if you are from New Mexico?"

Well anyway -Now I am no longer a resident -but still claim it as my first home and place of birth.

I can't believe you didn't put a used trans in it. It costs less to put a used trans in one than it does to buy another car that might give you troubles as well. Hopefully the jeep hasn't done that.

I don't know what kind of condition it is in -but a very good condition 1st gen could bring a lot more than the cost of a new -used car. There was someone on PT who sold a pristine 1st gen for 10K. I think it might have been trwiesss. But I can't remember for sure.
Success is a measure of determination!
