  • Problems with speedometer

I have problems with my speedo.

Nowadays when I start my car and begin driving it won't work. The indicator stays pointing zero. After 4-5min drive, it will start to bounce. It bounces from 0 to 80, sometimes even to 150km/h. After little jumping jumping it usually steadies for a minute or two. Then it starts haywiring again and returns to off-mode, 0. Usually after this show, the meter doesn't want to move a bit, no mater how fast I drive.

At august I remember this happened the first time. I was driving home from work, and my speedo started to jump a bit up & down, like 3-4km/h jumps. The meter settled down very soon, and then worked until the same happened at low speeds again next week. This problem has existed ever since.

I've checked my instrument cluster wirings, they were fine. Is the problem at the speedometer sender? And where is it located?

    Helps please

Well I don't have that sort of a problem which would go off by turning geadlights on

Has anyone had same kind of problems with 2gen probe?

I had a headlight issue with my 93 a while back that was affecting most of the gages in the car. When the lights were on, everything went haywire. Come to find out the harness for the left headlight had been rubbing on the light frame, and eventually wearing down the shielding and causing a short. So its kind of opposite from your issue, but you best bet would be to check all the wiring and make sure you dont have a short somewhere.
See what happens when you turn on just the running lights. Same thing? Or does it happen just when you turn the headlights on? A very curious problem indeed!

          Thanks for the tips :-)

I've followed the wires a bit, but not all the way. I guess I'll have to check them. It's just awful thing to do, there's -6 degrees Celsius outside and wind blowing, ah so warm...

And no, it doesn't matter do you drive lights on, parks on or without any lights. And every power device work correct.

Tomorrow I'll go and jack it up and find the wires. I'll be posting here my results.

i had the same exact problem a while ago. turned out to be the speed sensor. just take it to any old shop transmission shop and they will do it for like 50 bucks or so.
