  • How To Get Rid Of A Factory Amp In A 97 Ford Probe!!!

I admit it, I didn't write this. I found this on another website and found it helpful for my new head unit installation. I couldn't find the speaker wires then I realized there's an amp in the circuit.

And this is what he said...

"If your someone who has a 1997 Ford Probe and are installing a new head unit/system, then this is your lucky day! Im going to go through the step by step process on how to get rid of that god forsaken factory amp that's in your car so your brand new head unit will produce sound! But, before you get started, there are a couple things that you are going to need.

    TOOLS:
2 pieces of metal thats shaped like a U (sorry, I don't know the exact name but, you can get them at any auto store for like $1), screw driver, 20 PVC butt connectors (I used 22-18 Ga./Cal.), adaptor wires, a monkey wrench, scizors (haha), and some crimpers.

    Step 1:
Ok, now that you have everything, it's time to take out that ugly factory radio. Take the U shaped pieces of metal and stick them in the holes that are on each side of the radio. Now bend each U shaped piece of metal away from eachother (like your ripping your shirt off) and pull it out. It may take some time since it's snugly in there.

    Step 2:
Now you need to know which wires go to which speakers. Your probably wondering where the speaker wires are. Well, cut that thick grey wire. Well, well, well. What do we have here? Our speaker wires! Now take a good look, write them down or what ever you please so you don't have to keep running back to your pc!

    Front Left Positive= Brown
Front Left Negative= Light Blue with Black Stripe
    Front Right Positive= Light Green
    Front Right Negative= Light Blue
Rear Left Positive= Violet with White Stripe
Rear Left Negative= White with Red Stripe
Rear Right positive= White with Orange Stripe
    Rear Right Negative= Yellow

There, now connect your wires with the PVC butt connectors and place your new head unit in it's place. Turn on your head unit to see if it's getting power and all that good stuff. If not, then relook at your connections and make sure that they are all secure. Don't bother trying to play anything because that evil factory amp is being a pain! Take alittle brake because that was the easy part...

    Step 3:
Ok, now it's time to get to that factory amp! Go pop the trunk and take off that plastic rear dash or what ever you want to call it. All you have to do is unscrew the screws under it and undo the two strings that are holding it up.

Now that that is out of the way, look strait down. You should see some little caps with some handles. Unscrew them. Put them somewhere where you will remember them! Now all around that panel you will see a whole bunch of little caps. Rip them right off, but don't break them. Now remove that panel.

Look at the panel to the right of that one. You will see some more caps and stuff. Remove them all! Don't try to take it out just yet. Jump in your back seat and fold down the seat. You will see three more caps and a screw (Curse you Ford!). Remove those and take off the plastic around the metal bar that connects to the seat and also the one thats around the seat belt. When you take that off you will see more caps! Rip those off and go back out to the trunk and pull that panel out. There will be two clipps holding it in so pull hard!

Now go back to your back seat and look around. You should see one more cap that connected to the frame of the car. Take that one off! Now there are some clips on this panel that are connecting to the frame so pull hard and remove it.

    Step 4:
You should be seeing your factory speaker and if you have new speakers with you, this would be a good time to install them so you dont have to remove all the panels off again to do it. Look below the speaker, you should see a gold bolt. Look below that one and you should see another one. Look under the foam, you should see another one. Unscrew all of them and push all the screws into the frame so the factory amp will fall down. Peel back the black rubber/plastic thing thats behind the seat belt and you should see a big metal box. There it is, the factory amp! Now take it out and you should see three connectors that plug into the amp. Undo them all.

    Step 5:
Now your probably wondering what wires are what and I will tell you what they are. Look at the connector with the wires that are green, green with an orange stripe, and green with a black stripe. You don't need those so don't worry about them. You should notice that the speaker wires have changed colors as they come out of the amp and these are what they are:

    Front Left Positive= Blue
Front Left Negative= Blue with Green Stripe
Front Right Positive= Blue with Orange Stripe
Front Right Negative= Blue with Black Stripe
Rear Left Positive= Green with Yellow Stripe
Rear Left Negative= Green with Orange Stripe
Rear Right Positive= Blue with White Stripe
Rear Right Negative= Blue with Black Stripe

There, now that you know whats what, all it is now is a simple matter of cutting and connecting them. When you done, put back all the panels and BAM! your done and you head unit should be working"!

That all seems like a lot of work. I just bypassed the amp with a nifty little connector.

Ugly factory radio!?! I don't get, I think they "look" great. Best thing to do is not put butt connectors in there anywhere. Just disconnect the factory audio wires, disconnect the amp, zip tie the wires out of the way (for future restorations,) and run new wire to all 4 spots. I put 14 gauge in 8-9 years ago, and while I've swapped stereos several times, I still have plenty of wire for soldering in new radio harnesses should i want to. Never had a speaker cut in and out either.

Yes, if keeping the factory head unit, much easier to just get an adapter to wire up and be able to plug it directly into the factory harness.

If adding an aftermarket head unit and amp, not much more difficult and better to just run bigger gauge speaker wire, aftermarket signal wires, etc.
