Anybody tried making a custom front valve cover valley cover? If so -then post some pics up. I am trying to make me one with little success and so I am looking for some ideas. I may post some pics of my own attempt later on -to see if I can get some ideas on how to make it better.

I have been trying to make the bent sheet metal type -but something about it just doesn't sit right with me:
So this is the CNC idea I am tossing around:
But after calling around to a few of the CNC shops -so far nobody wants to touch it. I think they absolutely do not want to do "one-offs". One CNC machine shop that advertises "we can machine nearly anything" quickly told me that "We don't do automotive stuff" even though I explained that it was an extremely simple piece. I may end up having to machine it myself if I can't find a CNC shop that will do it.Last edited by KLZE Porsche; February 7, 2017, 05:27 PM.Success is a measure of determination!

Machining? Couldn't you cut a flat piece, bend up the edges with a brake and weld the corners, grind the welds, then sand and paint or chrome it?Probe out for Harambe

It is far easier for me to take a block of aluminum, radius the corners/edges and hollow it out with an end mill. I was just trying to be lazy and have a machine shop make it for me. It would save me a lot of time and elbow grease.
The real one in the example above is made of sheet metal (aluminum) and bent. But to cut slots, bend the edges and have someone seam weld it -would take some extreme skills and probably at the cost of 10 cases of beer or so. I just didn't like the open ends of it and how -no matter how you try to finish the ends (short of slotting, bending, seam welding) -it just can't look good in my vision.
However -the CNC one with slots in the ends that are made just the right size so that they grip standard 7mm or 8mm wires and hold them like wire holders would -seems like a much better option to me. And then there is the possibility of a logo etching between the two bolt holes.Last edited by KLZE Porsche; February 8, 2017, 10:06 PM.Success is a measure of determination!

After some trimming and a little more polish -I think I like it a little better. However -the CNC version would still be sweeter. Or perhaps a carbon fiber approach!

Well it looks good. Do you have risers underneath the cover or are those screws going through the valve cover itself?Probe out for Harambe

So they screw into the typical location and provide a threaded hole for the cover screws to thread into.

So now -I just put the modified bolt in like normal to bolt down the valve cover and then install the valley cover and run the screws into the tops of the two modified Honda pieces. I also trimmed the pull knobs from the spark plug wires so that the valley cover will sit lower:

It will do for now -but I just can't get the billet idea out of my head. I finally did get a quote back for the basic machine work from one machine shop and it was $150. This doesn't even include time for a final finish. I would still have to spend many hours to add any finishing touches such as polish, anodising and/or laser etching wording etc... I could see easily putting several hundred dollars into it.
So I ended up buying a carbide tipped 1/8" router bit -with sealed roller bearing -to put the radius's on all edges. I bought a bar that is the exact size needed for the raw piece -so that I do not have any machine work to rough it into the correct dimensions.
All I need to do is to put a 10 deg face on two sides -which I figured I could do with a large sanding drum in a drill press. Then I would route the edges and finally use a vertical mill to hollow it out underneath. We have a mill where I work and I was told that I could use it.
The 6160 bar cost me around $15.50 and the router bit cost me $20.88. So at this point I have less than $40 into it -which is a far cry from $150 and leaves a margin to pay for the other options (anodising or laser etching)Success is a measure of determination!
