Chris, why didn't you just carry over the old number to your new phone/service? Trying to get away from someone?
I wish it were that exciting. The truth is that I did it to save some cash. I wanted a specific phone (the Motorola V300). To get that phone and keep my number, I would have had to pay $250 for the phone and the number transfer fee (I'm not even sure how much that is). So, being that I'm such a cheapass, I went a different route -- I signed a new one year contract and got my phone for free.
Besides, I like my new number better.
