  • Need Help Completing Monitors

Hey guys, its been a real long time since ive been on the site. Ive done countless searches in the forums and online.

I am having trouble completing monitors so its preventing me from passing smog. Ive had this issue for a number of years. Ive changed the ECU with a new remanufactured one and also performed preventative maintenance stuff like timing belt, water pump cam/crank seals, fuel filter, oil and etc. Ive driven the vehicle with more than half tank of gas and had A/C on. There are no check engine lights either.

I am asking help because this car has been sitting on my driveway for years and its runs and drives great but I cannot pass smog and its preventing me from driving it far. I only drive it around the block once a week. If I cant figure this out soon my only solution is to sell it or donate. Which of course I do not want to do since this was my HS grad present back in 2000. Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

Do you have a catalytic converter, and a working EGR valve? It's OBD II so you can pickup a scanner that can tell you what isn't completing the tests. I have Bosch scan tool, it uses bluetooth to show everything on my phone. It's pricey but it does just about everything with paid for modules. You can look at O2 sensors individually on the screen and see if one is not working right, yet still hasn't tripped the light. Better than paying a shop to give you a printout or something, because you can check it every time you need to after fixing something.

Thanks Blue for the reply. Yes the car has everything including cats. Ive already scanned the vehicle and looked at live data to figure out what is not working. So far everything at that time looked okay. I will try again to see if anything new pops up. The problem is I have to drive at night since I have expired tags.

BTW, the only monitor that passed is O2 Heater. The rest is incomplete.

It would help to have a list of things checked but not completing I think my Millenia ECU checks 5-7 different things off the top of my head. Those can be seen on a different page from the codes on my scan tool. If the car hasn't had tags or been driven for awhile you can get a temp tag for it even though you own it. Usually one tag per year so use it wisely. Then you're legal for a month. The heater part of the O2 sensor just warms them on start up if the other circuit is bad/not reading correctly, the O2 sensor could still be bad. That will show as the catalytic converter not ready and the O2 sensors not being ready. If you can watch the O2 sensors on the scan tool they will read high and low, swinging from .7-.8 down to really low and just not showing stable even after the car is warm. There's no code because the circuit is not broken. Eric the Car Guy has a video on catalytic converters and O2 sensors that's pretty good on the subject. He fixes a red Subaru in the video.
