  • bad ALT?

ok so i have posted this issue i have on my facebook group and got some responses.. and im leaning twords the ALT being bad... but i wanted to post here as well to see what everyone else who isnt on that group has to say.....

First thing.. i tested the battery volts... here is results... 12.6 when car is off.... 14.6 when car is idling .. now here is my problem..... revving the engine the volts shoot up over 16.0 at about 4K now im sure if i go higher in the RPMs it will even shoot the volts higher and blow something...

Second thing... when revving the motor the radio shuts off and we are pretty sure that it shuts off due to Overvoltage protection...

If it is not the ALT what the hell can it be... Thanks in advance for helping with this probe-lem lol

Pretty sure over voltage is a bad alternator and that can damage the battery. The regulator is not reducing the field strength to reduce the output at 14.5v. Definitely get a second opinion, I'm not an expert on how our alternators work. I just have a general idea of how it works. Under voltage I check everything else first, belts, connections, corrosion.

well i just thought of this .. since i think its the ALT along with quite a few other people... if it is the ALT. if i unhook the ALT completely and rev the motor up the battery gauge shouldnt shoot up. so in theory if it does not shoot up when its unhooked then that would deff say that the ALT is bad ..... but if it still shoots up then i am at a loss for what it would be causing an issue like that ...

Just loosen the 3 bolts holding it on and take it to the part store to test it

It's definitely your alternator. I'm 100% positive as I had this happen to me a few years back. I run a Beltroincs sti driver (undetectable Radar laser detector that reads running voltage also) and thank God I have that sti driver, I got onto the highway just at the edge of the city heading out to a cottage and the detector kept screaming at me (because it was fine as I was cruising through the city with lower rpms just before) I realized it was the alternator overcharging the battery as the detector would only scream when the rpms were higher being on the hwy. Stopped at a parts place, swapped alternator out in the parking lot and problem solved.

If I would have kept driving with the alternator overcharging like it was, by the time I would have gotten to the cottage (which are about an hour away) I would have probably had a melted battery due to overcharging.

On another note I've also seen this happen on a friend's protege 5, and it actually fried the battery because he wasn't paying attention or didn't understand what was happening.

The voltage regulator (which is an integral part of the alternator) is bad. Very standard symptom, and I can't see how there could be any other possible cause.

And it's best not to run the engine at all with it like that, because the very high voltage can damage the electrics. If you need to drive somewhere to get parts (or whatever) disconnect the alternator (or alternator belt) and you can drive a shortish distance on battery power alone (I once managed nearly 100kms, but I wouldn't risk going anywhere near that far!).

edit: just saw I'm saying the same as KLZEEscort.

I know Napa up here in Canada has lifetime warranty on their alternators and starters, so I'd imagine it's the same in the U.S.A....just a thought.
