the only thing Probe related to the concept was the name. ford need a name fast since there new 'mustang' wasnt going over so well. so they had to use a name they already owned. so they used the probe name that they had been using on concept cars since the early 80's. there was like 4 or 5 different probe concept cars also.

I wonder if the Probe or what ever it would have been called, would have lived longer if it was sold as a Mazda? That way it would be serviced as a Mazda car, and Ford would not have to deal with it. Maybe not, because there would be too many KL cars to try to sell. And maybe not if it took sales away from the RX-7 like it did the Mustang?

      MazdaSpeed Probe?

the probe concept series (if u google it, theres I, II, III, IV and V) were ford's leading the way in aerodynamics studies. they were never meant to become production vehicles, though the nameplate somehow made it.

I know, this was to show the Mazda concept. The Probe concepts have been posted many times, but I just found this MX-03 concept. Thought it would be nice to share the photos, and to compare it to the Probe. Even though the Mazda concept looks a lot more like the Probe. Too bad Ford didn't adopt the RWD setup with a KL engine...

I'm pretty sure the name 'Probe' is what killed the Probe, Steve. Even if it was a Mazda-badged car, the Probe would need to have been called something else in order to be as successful as the Mustang, or the 3, or the Focus, for that matter. A name is very important. Nobody wants to drive a 'Probe', lol. Not that the name 'Focus' is very cool sounding, but it's a hell of a lot better than 'Probe' to somebody who doesn't know anything about cars and has to choose. (I say this as if people actually had to choose between these cars, but I'm referring to sales numbers, then and now).

The rear end looks like a cross between an NSX and a Supra. The B and C pillars are definitely Probe-ish (until you look at it from the back), and the front end (for some reason) reminds me of an S13 (from side) slash MR2 (from front).

                          I vote MX-03.
