Okay so it seems to me that this list could be lengthened if its true that all G series gears/shafts/shift forks work.

      What about early 90's protege trannies? Or early 90's escort GT's? 1st gen n/a 4 cyl mx6/probe?

Dubbed, perhaps we should add the 2nd gen 4 cyl mx6/probe tranny gear ratios to your list. Those are for sure to work.

      Lets get a database here!

I think I would just take all of the Contour SVT's gears, with the lower final for better gas mileage. Yes, they are longer and slower gears. But with the custom Twin-Turbo set-up I want, that's more time boosting and less time shifting. It's time for a PGT-T to put a Supra in its place on the highway. I'm shooting for +/- 375WHP.

Holy crap I am soo excited about this thread. Hell yea, i want to know exactly what we can do with our gears as well. I hope this deffinatelly works for you. Also, the base second gen 5th gear is supposedly longer as well. Please correct me if I am wrong, but this could be some cool shit.

The MTX75 has a few variations- as you all are seeing with its different gear sets.

But be aware that it also has a few variations of the SAME gears within a gear set- IOW, you can get an MTX with standard duty gears or you can get an uprated MTX with exactly the same gear ratios because it has tougher gears. These uprated MTX's came in two strengths- one had SHOT PEENED 1st gears only, and another had SHOT PEENED 1st and 2nd gears.

The shot peening process is apparently what separates the men from the boys here.

You might be able to cryo treat and shot peen the Probe's gears and be just as well off strength-wise.
If you get a standard duty MTX75 of a different ratio, you may be worse off than where you are now because of the higher than normal rated input torque from the 2.5L Probe motor may be more than the standard duty MTX can handle.

I don't know how you can tell shot peened parts from regular parts, but there must be a catalog which would have the different part numbers involved, or maybe you could just have the regular MTX gears shot peened yourself.

              Hello,

I used 1999 Escort ZX2 S/R transmission. I took the guts of the tranny out and stuck them in my probe case. Matt Maas used the internals from a low mileage 2000 Escort ZX2 (not S/R) on his beast as well.

The only reason I did it is because is was MUCH cheaper than a rebuild (replacing sychros and bearing). I have been through 4 transmissions. Almost always the gears begin to grind or the case cracks due to something like wheelhop.

The grinding is corrected with the low mileage escort cluster. My tranny shifted like butter even in sub zero temp. I used GM sychromesh for fluid though and that made a big difference.

As for the case....well back in the day we didn't have all the goodies that are being offered today. In my opinion as long as you don't have shitty motor mounts or you wheel hop the crap out of your car that case should be plenty strong.

Basically what 99.9% of the people in this forum need are new sychros because their car is grinding during high RPM shifts. The escort internals will fix this problem for cheap.

As for shift forks and final drives....bla bla bla....I have only heard of a few people breaking shift forks and its probably because they abuse the car by driving like a jackhole (no lift to shift and such).

For those crying about the final drive.....if you want taller gearing get bigger wheels. If you want better gas mileage you aren't gonna get that by swapping to any other 5th gear. My ZE with stock chrome swirlies was getting 30MPG at cruise....if you want better then that maybe you should by then entire escort! Changing your RPM 200-300 isn't gonna change squat. Our cars were made to cruise that higher RPMs its no big deal at all.

ON TOPIC - What are you trying to build?

I would still like to see a way in which we can drop the gap between the 1-2 and 2-3 shift. This is performance oriented for me.

I was hoping to have more options for gears, seeing as how 2g PGT's are never in the yards. I always see 4 cylinders, a few escort zx2's, and some of the other cars we have mentioned.

With my plan of 300 whp (Im at 250-260 ish now) I think i may be going through a few gears and need to have something lined up.

trying to make as simple as possible, taking from what i've read in this and jeff's info in the thread from a yr ago...
.....according to jeff's install all i need is a tranny off a 99+escort, take my mx6 tranny apart and simply replace all the mx6 tranny guts w/ all of the escorts minus the final drive down and it'll just bolt right up, then put the case back on and your done???

i could only wish it was this simple, the ultimate tranny rebuild if so
                    something different

Shifting at red line stock gear
2nd picks up at 3850... which we all know is entierly too long

3rd picks up at 5002 not bad

                      4th pick up at 5460

Now if we switched to a contours 2 and 3 we get:

2nd picks up at 4480 now dosent that sound friggin great!

                      3rd picks up at 4690

                      4th picks up at 4970

Man those look like great numbers to me! we would DEFFINLTY have to hit 4th in the quarter mile with these ratios as 3rd would be used up alot quicker as it is about 10% taller and thus we would get about 10% MPH out fo the gear but 10% better acceleration... that sounds FINE to me.... unfortunetly all the 4th gears are so close it prolly is not WORTH the effort to change them althoug if the focus REALLY does have a 1.028 rather than the 1.03 i guess it is a lil better....

Post your Email and i will send out a spread sheet and HTML page on shift points, with calculations for imputting dyno numbers as well to calculate optimum shift points based on YOUR torque curve.

The spread sheet will allow you to simply input the desired gears and calculate what you will pick up the next gear, and best of all if calculates this in 100 rpm intervals from 6K-7K rpms... so if will tell you not only redline but if you shift at 6600 rpm what rpm you wil pick up the gear in as well, or 6500 or 6100... you get the point...

it SHOULD be posted on the main page soon but for now i will email it privately....

I've never heard of a contour's transmission being similar to the G-series mazda transmissions, but I've never bothered looking. IS the Contour's an "M-series"? I've never heard of it.

As for G-series, I've done lots of research on them. Here is a break down of the cars they come in:

                            87 323 GT (cable operated)
                            88-89 323 GTX
                            90-94 Protege LX
                            91-94 Mercury Capri (cable operated)
91-96 Escort GT, LX-E and Tracer LTS
                            95-98 Protege ES
                            93-97 Probe (all models)
                            93-97 626/MX-6 (all models)
01-03.5 Protege w/2.0 FS motor (not the 1.8 FP, they had F-series)
                            98-02 626 (all models)
98-present Escorts (all models including ZX2's)
94-???? Sephia's with 1.8 liter mazda motor. I think its 94-97, not sure

Thats about all I know of. There may be one or two more but not many. I'm not sure about the 2.2 naturally aspirated 1st gen MX6/Probe's though.

I know the F2-T cars had H-series transmissions which were beefier...the regular F2's might have the H-series too, i dunno....
