Interesting Find doing some research

well I was doing a little I'm bored today research and I came across a few things that I thought was interesting, maybe this has been posted before maybe not

very interesting intake manifold

also if you take the heads off this motor it almost look like a KL block

but what if it is the birth of the kl block that started as a 3.0l and got debored (SP) and made into a 2.5l

complete motor

so what your thoughts?

If I'm not mistaken that looks like a 3.0L v6 from a 929. Which I thought was based on ( or related to) the KL platform in some degree. Kinda like how the KJ is a cousin of KL this is another not to often seen cousin. Also thought this is a cast block aluminum headed v6. Could be wrong, but just my 2 cents

You are correct. It was a cast iron block. The ealier version that is seen in the first photo was found in MPVs and older 929 cars. It had 3 valves per cylinder and had rocker arms that contained the hydraulic lash adjusters. The later version seen with the side swept intake manifold was 4 valves per cylinder if I am correct. It was used in the 929 cars until 94 I believe. In the MPV they ended up going to the 2.5L 4-valve engine that was similar to the duratec. It may have even been the Duratec. I haven't done a lot of research on that one.

But the later version 3.0L that is seen in the last photo was also the one to have the green top injectors that flow 336cc at 3 bar. These are the same green top injectors that will fit into our KL rails.

The later model 3.0L also had a very good supply of high quality stainless steel bolts on the intake manifold -as seen in the photo. This is why they are all so shiny. I used to snag them from every 929 that I found that had them. The JYs never used to charge me at that time for bolts. I believe they charge for cans of bolts now. But I got a huge stock of them when they were free to me. I have several large jars full of them. They can be used in so many places on the KL motors.

P.S. I had also been interested in finding out if the heads might possibly bolt onto our 2.5L -and unfortunately they are not even close.

JE-ZE 3.0 v6. The fourth picture looks like a different engine. I'd like to come up with an excuse to use one someday. RWD orientation and only atx transmission works with it, 203hp, heavier bottom end. KL sound for sure listen

It is the same block -but just different heads and intake manifold. It is still a JE 3.0L

According to Wiki -they made a manual transmission version of the MPV. Although I have never seen -or been able to find one myself.

There's all kinds of threads on JE- swaps and aside from the MPV manual transmission they always mention the B2600 and RX7 transmissions as options. I thought there was a complication with manual transmissions and the JE-ZE ECU... then again we do the Maf swap over here sooo. Apparently the 18v engine in the top pic was SOHC? There's so few pics out there. I also thought the JE-ZE had the same style intake as the top photo, and that bottom photo is supposed to be a newer JE before they went to Duratech?

mazda not only made a 3.0 v6 for the 929 but they also made a 2.5l v6 for the 929 (The 2.5 L J5-DE is a DOHC motor producing 159 hp) this motor also appeared in the

1991-1993 Efini MS-9

Mazda Bongo

That is correct!

Here is a head on eBay where you can see the cam in several of the pics.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-0-MAZDA-MP...ZRyHha&vxp=mtr

I had an MPV with this engine and AWD and I absolutely loved it until the starter went out. It had a ton of torque and was a really peppy mini van with lots of room inside.

But if the starter goes out on the AWD version -you will be pulling the engine, trans and transfer case to change the starter. There was absolutley no way to get to that SOB. Some damned engineers don't give a crap about maintenance workers obviously.

After I let go of the vehicle -then it crossed my mind (too late of course) -that I could have cut an access hole in the wheel well to get to the starter and made a bolt-on cover plate to cover the hole up for future starter access.

I would love to get my hands on another AWD MPV. They are not like one of these new wave crossover AWD assemblies that can't handle off roading. They have the same transfer case as an explorer 4WD

speaking of the mazda bongo, back when i was looking for manifold options (years ago) there was a 2.5L petrol version that appeared to have a manifold that "might" bolt onto the KL's but i could never find pics of it. Just did another search this is what it looks like (clearly wont bolt on) but i like the design:

looks like its based off the 929 engine.

Looks like some sort of VRIS system on there. Like a DE's double at the throttle end and a connection at the other end, but nothing connecting the middle.

This was a similar manifold that would take a little modification to make it work -but has identical cylinder spacing:
