The trany used in the focus and contour is the MTX75. It's completely un related to the G series. The SVT Focus uses a 6 speed that is unrelated to any other trans.
None of the parts will fit let alone the entire internal assembly.

That alone should tell you they are not the same.

    Dont do it!

No. GT" use H types and we use G types.

They were F type gears. Most escorts and baes mazda 4 bangers used the F.
Just trying to help out a little:

    The MTX-7X gearboxes are Ford-made
The SVT focus and MS6/3 use a getrag gearbox

The gears from any G series should fit. G15, G25, G35 (I'll be verifying the G35 gears soon... although it isn't geared as high as the escort)

I'll post the part numbers here soon for the input/output gears for those who want to buy new ones from Mazda.

Nothing on the MTX-75 is gonna work in our trans.

Some escorts came with the MTX-75 and some came with a G series, I think that's where these rumors started about things working.

Jeff Jeske swapped out the internals of A G series escort into his Probe GT case. This is 100% doable but no stronger then what we have. The only reason it's better is you can find newer escorts with less miles then Probes, so you are more likely to get a lower mileage tranny with better syncro's but it's not gonna be any stronger.

As far a gear ratio's, if you want a taller 5th I know the 2.0 gear works, I ran one for several months. It's a pretty big drop in RPM though if you keep the GT 1-4 and just the 2.0 5th. When shifting from 4k rpm in 4th id drop to 3k in 5th. This worked out pretty well but I did get into some speeds where I'd like to shift up to 5th but if I did it was a bit low in rpm, so I'd have to just stay in 4th. If you went any lower for a 5th gear it would be even worse and eventually it would be irritating to drive.
It would be like driving with no 3rd gear, you would have to rev the hell out of 2nd or when you shift to 4th it would dog the engine.
I'm now running all 2.0 guts in my GT case, at first there was a pretty noticable difference when shifting to 3rd as it's a bit "taller" then the GT 3rd, but 4th and 5th fell in line pretty well, after driving it for a while I don't even notice 3rd anymore and it feels perfectly natural. Plus the Turbo more then makes up for the slight gearing loss of the "taller" 3rd - 5th.

Now I do have to say since switching to the complete 2.0 gear set that I haven't broken anymore gears. I'm not sure if it's actually any stronger or I'm just getting smoother/less abusive as I get older, but it seems to be working for me.

As a note for anyone thinking about swapping the entire gear set, you must make sure that the final drives match. There has been a lot of controversy over the years as to exactly what the final is/was in each car, but I believe this is accurate:
      2.0:
      Final Drive 3.850 (to '94)-----4.105 ('95+)
      2.5L GT:
      Final Drive 4.105 (to '94)-----4.388 ('95+)

If you have a GT with a 4.11 final you can swap both shafts from A PSE tranny that also has a 4.11 final and be OK, if you have a GT that came with a 4.38 final (like me) you MUST remove the ring gear and install one that matches, or find a diff from A GT or MX-6 with the correct ring gear. You can NOT simply use the diff from the PSE/Escort as the axles have different spline counts and will not fit into the diff.

well just did the 5th gear mod and the results are in
        65mph @2950rpms
        thats down from 65mph @3150rpms
a modest drop for a 15 dollar mod, not including tranny oil and RTV.
some things i did noticed that people might take note of
My tranny did not come with a primary reverse gear setup pictured like this
        http://img239.imageshack.us/i/step3fqh7.jpg/

infact mine only had 2 sets of gears, both were located at the base of the case. so i dont know what kind of transmission that indicates. but either way, once i figured out what REALLY needs to be done, it was a pretty simple mod to complete. i have a 800 mile trip coming up this week so MPG will be something i'll be watching.
probe is sold, now i have what the probe was suppose to replace, but ironically replaced my probe

Later model G-Series tranny's dropped or moved the revers synchronizer, and actually have shorter shafts if I remember correctly. I know the Protege tranny's are like that but didn't know some Probes/MX-6's did as well. It's possible you don't have A factory tranny as well, did you check the VIN?

The numbers on the my tranny do not corresponded to my car as this is a remanufactured transmission. i did request that the transmission be a 96+ cause of the taller final drive.

you are correct about the changes of synco's, cause the transmission i removed the 5th gear components from was a 98 ZX2.

ok, just got back from a 800 mile trip and the MPG numbers are in. Highest recorded MPG was 30.15 and the lowest was 28.56
conditions were a fully loaded 95 PGT with all bolt-on's, over 80 lbs of cargo and another 130 for the passager with an average cruising speed of 72 miles and hour. the return trip was the best recorded MPG. i drove through mountain passes, freeway traffic, and a few pit stops, yet i still got 30 mile per gallon.
it took me a while to figure out my actual speed due to the 18" rims, thats why my MPG was at 28.56 at one time, i was going faster then i should have.

I just found out the our tranny and the 2003 MAZDASPEED Protege tranny (G5M) are one and the same. Can I go buy everything from 5th gear to the end of the input shaft to replace what's fried in my 97 PGT at a Mazda dealer and not get fitment issues at the transmission shop? I can't find a Probe or MX-6 5th gear set to save my life. Just soft parts like synchros. I need the actual gear and would like to just replace everything I have to remove with new parts while I'm at it. Any suggestions, I'm getting desperate but don't trust junkyard transmissions.

Guys, I'm updating this thread a bit since I found out a new ratio out of a 2.0 FS 96-97 626! The 5th gear ratio is .731 opposed to the lower .717 ratio found in PSE, MX-6 RS or 4 door sedan escort...I wanted the lower one but I think i'm gonna install those anyway...I don't feel like going back to the junkyard and it's still an upgrade to my current .795 5th gear...

that .731 sounds promising, I want to boost in 5th but not for too long. Now breaking out the calculator.

Does anyone has a PSE 5th gear to sell me...planning on a transmission rebuilt for my V6 and would definitely like a taller 5th gear.

I know this is an older thread but I didn't want to ask such a noob question on a new thread.

The 5th gears are the first ones you see once you take off the cover right? I don't want to grab the wrong ones.

See how a noob question that is. Thanks for the help.

Yes they are. You'll need a small pin punch, like 1/8 maybe a little smaller, and a punch or screwdriver and 32mm socket for the lock nuts. Take the cover off (10 mm bolts), drive out the roll pin on the shift fork, put the trans in fourth and push the fork in to shift into fifth. With the trans in both gears, unstake the lock nuts and take them off. Everything should just slide off after that. Make sure the synchro teeth are good on the 5th gear . If they aren't you will have problems with it popping out of gear.
