Man that is incredible. I usually spend at least that much time just staring at the car when I change the oil.

I am going turbo here (well, I started buying parts at least), and if I have it tooling around by Christmas I'll be happy.

I was planning on just getting the clutch/flywheel installed professionally, but this thread makes me think I could do it. But I don't have a lift or an impact wrench, and what would I do if I mess it up?

I don't use a lift or impact wrench. I use a jack and a ratchet.

One person, a ratchet, and a jack. I have all those things. I am set. I guess I'll give it a shot myself then, but defintely won't be beating any records, well maybe for longest install. I just better have a second car by then.

Although it is nice to have someone else there, just in case. And usually all it costs is a case of beer and maybe some burgers.

Hi guys. I haven't had a chance to get on PT in a while, but I finished my clutch install last week. It went smoothly thanks to Travis, but I was nowhere near an hour and 37 minutes. I'm amazed that you can do that job so fast There were a few spots I had trouble with that I thought I'd give you other first timers a heads up on:

-Don't put too much thought into popping the drivers axle in and out of the transmission. A hammer and chisel will pop it out no problem, just try a few different angles. To get it back in, simply grab the shaft itself and shimmy it in there. I pounded on it with a 3lb. sledge for a few minutes before I figured this out.

-When removing the axles, I noticed that my balljoints are shot (ripped boots) on both sides, since I also replaced the passenger side axle. This reminded me that when the car is torn apart, INSPECT EVERYTHING. Anyway, my point here was that it was easier for me to disconnect the balljoint from the hub to get the axle out. Travis suggested that it can be done without doing this, which it can, but for me it was easier with the extra room.

-Replace the axle seals. They're $2.50 apiece at Autozone and it takes no time to install them.

-Be prepared to spend some time getting the tranny to line back up when you reinstall it. Mine wouldn't go all the way flush with the block without the help of 2 of the lower engine to tranny bolts. (A friend to help will also make you a much happier person)

-I filled up 20 "write-on" Ziploc bags with all the fasteners I removed. I would suggest labeling everything (ie. rear mount bolts, crossmember, etc.) This is an essential step; you'll spend 2 years trying to figure out where all those nuts and bolts go.

If I think of anything else I'll add to this list, but I think that just about covers everything that might help someone else. Thanks again to Travis for all the help

I just finished my clutch replacement on my mx6 last week as well however i didnt see this write up before hand... nowhere near that time because i took off both sides which means i had to remove a few more things... like down pipes and whatnot... one thing i would like to add is that i was told be many people that you should get your flywheel resurfaced everytime you put a new clutch in ... orielys did mine for like 15 bucks.....ps has anyone ever seen 213k on a factory clutch because i am almost certain it had never been replaced

One question - in the last bulleted step, you say slide the tranny off the motor. Do you remove the tranny completely at this stage?

The reason I ask is because I am looking at a tranny swap soon on my free PGT... and I recall reading something about not pulling out both CV axles so that some component in the differential doesn't fall out... is this true? Do I need to worry about this when pulling the tranny out? I haven't been this deep into the car in a long while, and never all by my lonesome... so I want to make sure I am not missing something and that I won't make more problems for myself.

Yes, it comes completely out. You shouldn't have a problem with the gears in the differential as long as you don't drop it onto the floor or hit it with a hammer or something. Although, I have also read about that before so when I was trying to get the intermediate shaft back in, I stuck the left axle back into the diff, just to be on the safe side.

                        Drivers axle shaft

Followed Travis's workup for my clutch replacment and only had one problem, I can not and mean can not get the drivers side axle shaft out. I wound up pulling the right, and the intermediate and lowering the whole tranny with the left shaft in place. I have hit the damn thing a million times, sprayed it with penetrant, WD40, and heated it with a torch. I have wedged screwdrivers, crowbars and chisels between the shaft and the tranny and I can only get it to move 1/4 inch and then nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions how to get this out. I am at a loss for whits now....Thanks

I wish I could do that but the drivers side axle now looks llike beirut from me kicking the s@#t out of it, now I need to remove it and replace with a reman.

If its that stuck, try this: with the passenger side axle out, put a long punch through where the passenger side axle comes out and hit the driverside axle out from inside the tranny. Make sure you're really hitting the axle and not part of the diff. This will work better if someone is also pulling on the axle while you hit it.

I thought about that last night, just concerned about the diff rod that is directly in my way, but I truly think I have no other option. I am going to take your advise and then I am going to throw the halfshaft through a wall....(Thats for my satisfaction.....its not part of the sticky write up)....
