  • Overcharging Problem, Help!

So i left the store and my lights started flickering. Then my voltage gauge spiked all the way to high. Both my headlights flashed again and then they both blew out at the same time. I drove 3 minutes home and shut the car off. if i put the car in neutral and let it sit the voltage gauge sits at normal. Only when i put it in gear does the gauge spike wicked high. I just replaced the battery 4 days ago. Would this most likely be an alternator problem. I need advice right now I'm stuck in new jersey and i live in mass. So i really need an accurate answer help please

Sounds like the internal regulator in the alternator went bad.

That's what i was thinking but i just wanted to be sure that it couldn't be anything else. What else other then the alternator could cause that kind of problem?

I honestly can't think of anything other than the voltage regulator that would cause this.

I had that problem happen to me twice in one month and twice since then. I think it may be a bad design on the voltage regulator. Just make sure there is some type of warranty with the alternator or voltage regulator that you buy. Thats my advice.

Changed the alternator at an advance auto parts parking lot (wasn't fun) problem totally fixed. That's what you get for going on vacation and having your car break....not fun. Drove there on battery power. Go Probe GO!!
