  • The Official "what should i do next" Thread

So, you may find yourself wondering... "what should I do next to my 5 speed Probe GT" We all know that you don't care how nice your car looks, and you just want to go faster! That's what we live for in the performance section, to GO FASTER!!!

    Intake Section
So, you're thinkin you're all bad ass with your K&N filter on your VAF as your only mod. Why not get yourself a nice cold air intake.... so you do a search and come up with this...
    http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...&highlight=CAI
    and this... http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...did=1700964153
and now you're not sure whether you want HotShot or PRM or AudioXTC or the Prelude or the HKS or the Weapon R or HOME DEPOT!!!! you are so excited and confused and have no clue where to get these things, so you go to http://www.probeparts.com/parts/?cat=00000000 and find out where!

    Exhaust Section
Being that you are hardcore, you have an APC muffler. Your friends are making fun of you and they call it your "fart can" You can't really back it up by saying it adds horsepower, because face it, it DOESNT. You will need at least a full catback to do that. Being the good probetalker that you are, you do a search and find this!!!
    http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...atback+exhaust
Damn, you are so excited that you tell all your friends all the brand names that you wanna get, like Borla, BroSpeed, Pacesetter, HKS, Greddy. You could be even more hardcore and go with a custom job at a shop and get whatever size piping that you want, and have them install any shiny chromed out muffler that you bring to them. This will take a little more of your time, and you will have to call around to places (yes, you'll have to use your phone) and you will be able to find any muffler you want at almost any performance online store, or ebay.
once again, you go here http://www.probeparts.com/parts/?cat=00000005 to see where to buy this shiznit from, or you do a search and find the most recent places to buy them from. (amazing how nice the search works huh?)

To accomodate your still kinda quiet exhaust note, you should probably get a test pipe or high flow cat, to further increase your exhaust flow. By searching you find that Jeff Jeske sells test pipes specifically for probes at http://www.jeffjeske.com/ and the you also find that testpipe.com also sells them here.. http://www.testpipe.com/htmlsite/testpipe.asp?item=Ford
You heard that Ben Spada had a stainless steel test pipe, and he got it from sparky93 as seen in this thread http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...did=1701002851 Dang, so now your exhaust is all set, you are all loud and you can definitely feel the difference right? well probably not, but you can at least pretend

    Clutches
Now your stock clutch just isn't cutting it with all your new found "POWER" is it? you feel it start to slip a few times and are getting sick of it. Well, it's time for an aftermarket clutch. We all know how much pgt95 and spada have been arguing back and forth lately about what clutch is better and what clutch has this and that clamping force, and it all seems like mumbo jumbo. well you can witness some arguing here, but in the middle there are some good points
    http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...ormance+clutch
wow that was fun to read, now time to read this one http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...ghlight=clutch and also do a search for BLUMX6 using the word clutch and you will find lots of nice ones.
So now you can say to your friends, yeah, i got a "racing cltuch" whether it be a clutchmasters, SBC, ACT, Centerforce (don't get that one), Valley Friction (careful with that too) or whatever you choose. I'm sure whatever you wish to choose though, you will go to www.probeparts.com and find the best prices for what you want and where to buy!
    (new link)http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...+dual+friction(/new link)
Well i hope you haven't gone and installed that clutch before reading this part. You may run into some problems when installing or afterwards, and your tranny's axle seals will be leaking (maybe you ripped one, or whatever) either way, you should replace them to insure no leaks! and wow look at this, i just searched for tranny seals, and this wonderful thread came up
http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...ight=axle+seal (wow the words are even highlighted, isn't the search function great) Also, this thread has PART NUMBERS!!!

I do think you are forgetting one more thing, to be hardcore, you must have a nice lightweight flywheel right? Dang your friends are going to wonder, wow, all of these things he is saying he has, i can do the same thing to my cars in Gran Turismo 3. Yeah, that's because these are actual PERFORMANCE mods. so back to the flywheels. You have a few choices here:
MX-3 flywheel (16-17 lbs) or lighten it for more performance, find them at www.car-parts.com for the 1.8L v8
    Fidanza (9 lbs Aluminum)
dang, can't figure out what one you want, well they can't either.. http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...ht=ur+flywheel
    Unorthodox Flywheel (11 lbs)
    Clutchmasters (7 lbs aluminum)
Stock Flywheel (23 lbs minus any amount of weight that you shave off the back)

Dang now you are getting faster and faster... and you don't need me talking to you like a kid anymore, because at this point, your car is running quite nicely, and you can probalby lay the smack down on my 14.9 second car (well, almost, you might need some more mods)

so lets continue (dang, this searching really does take a while!)
    Throttle Body
This is where you are striving for every horsepower that your engine has, and you are tempted to make a post saying "what do i do next" Well shit, we are just gettin started, lets start giving you some ideas
You have your CAI and now you need more air flow. Well, the best thing to do now is get yourself a 64 or 65mm Throttle Body. Stock size is 60mm, but damn, that extra 5mm diameter sure makes a difference. It just so happens that Greg 94 Pgt has been doing 65mm throttle body's for people here on the board, and for a pretty cheap price. Well here's the thread!
    http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...+throttle+body
Look at all those testaments at how nicely it works. Just needs the TPS adjustment and your idle is right back to 600rpm
You could also take it upon yourself to bring your throttle body to a shop and have them bore it out for you, and make you some new plates to go with it. This may take some searching, and the quality of the job may not be as good as Greg's shop. (Greg, you better continute to offer these, or i'll have to edit this beautiful post)

While you are at it, you could take it upon yourself to try to do a little porting and polishing to your intake manifold. this will most likely have to be your own custom work. well how the heck do you do that... check this thread out
    http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...light=p%26p+IM
you damn sure are not going to try to replace your VAF with a MAF so just get that idea out of your head. You could always just take the easy way out and go with a KLZE intake manifold if you didnt want to port yours out. Might as well get yourself some IM phenolic spacers and TB Spacers while you're at it.
These can be easily ordered from outlaw engineering... http://www.outlaw-engineering.com/ This will keep your manifold nice and cool, we all like cold air!

      still more...

      Headers
while you are in your engine bay with your intake manifold off, you should probably think about also increasing your exhaust flow even more! V8 guys aren't the only ones who can enjoy talking about their headers.
      you can either choose between:
Bosals... here's a nice thread about them http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...otshot+headers
Hotshots.. now these will be harder to find in stock, your best bet would be at rr-racing.com but even then, it might take a while. they are basically the same design as brospeed, but have a flex pipe and no ball joint connection
Pacesetter... these are your run of the mill cheap ass headers, they will work great, and yield power gains for sure.
Aerospeed??? hmm we might have to look out for these keep an eye on this thread http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...ospeed+headers
of course there's always custom headers out there, but this will take some searching by you once again

      Shifters
dang you have so much power that you can't even shift fast enough anymore, never thought that would happen huh?
well shit, time to get yourself a short throw shifter
      you can choose between the:
      PRD short throw
B&M Short throw check this.. http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...+throw+shifter
or the Pacesetter adjustable short throw shifter.
then you can also make one yourself, lets see if i can find a homemade STS thread...well here's one.. http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...+throw+shifter
here's another good one too, i wish the pics worked http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...+throw+shifter

      hardcore
So you wanna be HowLeTT huh? that will never happen, his car is way faster than yours still and he gets like 20 times more hot chicks than you, he has a girlfriend even. so take that!
so like, you wanna do some weight reduction and stuff, just take out some seats and get rid of the stuff that you generally don't use. Mike generally doesn't use anything but his cup holder. and he for DAMN SURE doesn't use his air conditioning
that's why he made this thread.. http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...threadid=46150

      Miscellaneous others
Get yourself an underdrive pulley! made by unorthodox racing. as you have noticed, i haven't been telling you where to get stuff anymore. you should have already learned to go to www.probeparts.com or just use the SEARCH button.
actually though, UDP's are sold for only 199.99 at corksport. SBC also sells them and so does Stillen.com

Stiffen up your motor mounts with Rafi's (www.rr-racing.com) poly mount inserts. or fill your mounts yourself with polyeurethane (sp?)

Get some performance cams! (fun stuff) either go with some KLZE cams and gain some top end power, or maybe some Interprep Tuning cams http://www.interpreptuning.com/engines_mazda.htm
Also, Mikeseli on probealk offers his own grinds
Or colt cams, there are many options... actually look at this thread, i found it very informational and useful
      http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...mikeseli+grind

Dang, i bet your distributor is having a heck of a time keeping up actually. You should probably upgrade to a MSD ignition. (i'm lazy right now and tired, so i will search for some good MSD threads in the morning)
You probalby need some spark plugs and spark plug wires too... GO WITH NGK V-power plugs and NGK wires, i'll do searching tomorrow!
If i missed anything, it's probably because it's 4am right now, and if you even made it this far, you are probably still as bored as you were when you started reading this. Private message me with anything that i missed and i will get it in this thread for sure

      In Closing
Well, you've about reached your N/A limit if you've done all of these modifications. You still haven't even touched your suspension, and are probably thinking of getting a nitrous application or even forced induction
For this i'll have to direct you to these forums

      Racing/Suspension http://forums.probetalk.com/forumdis...?s=&forumid=96
      N20 Technical Racing/Suspension http://forums.probetalk.com/forumdis...?s=&forumid=96

Does this Spada kid ever shut up??!!! sorry to say it, but no.

So it was brought to my attention that some fuel pump issues could come into effect here. Usually, this should be saved for nitrous or turbo applications
so anyways, if you are thinkin of getting a fuel pump, you should probably check out this thread. You'll see that Walbro pumps are basically the only way to go

        http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...regulator+pump

And for some fuel pressure regulator threads... just search "which fpr" here's a good thread i came up with

        http://forums.probetalk.com/showthre...ight=which+fpr

        it's quite good
if your wimpy american 2.5L isn't strong enough for you to begin with, you can always pretend you live in Japan and get the imfamous KLZE

thank florida mike for this write up....

And don't forget to get to the track after you install all of the things that Spada mentioned, and then rub your time slips in his face after you run a better time than him

          Nice FAQ Spada
