  • FE3 RX-8 build

I always wanted to put FE3 into a RWD platform. I recently got a miata, but I didn't fit into it so well. I was able for find 2004 RX8 with bad engine fairly cheap($2100). So I sold my miata and started a new project.

    Project Scope/Specs:
    Goal 350-400whp

    -2000 Kia Sportage FE3
    - Rx8 JDM 5 speed trans with 1990 B2600 Bellhousing
    - Custom built Intake and Exhaust manifolds
    - 50 trim t3/t4 turbo
    - MS3X engine management.

    Ok here are some pictures

    Rotary out

    [/URL]

B2600 bell housing and 5 speed Trans installed.

Since the head protrudes about 2.25" aft, the firewall had to be cut.

    Test fit

I got about 3/16" gap between the head components and the HVAC enclosure, just enough to close up the firewall with #12 sheetmetal

    Engine mounts are done.

Definitely A+ for creativity and effort. So does the FE3 actually bolt up to the Rx8 tranny without any modifications?

He used a b2600 bell housing.

Just realized this isn't a jdm Mazda Fe3.

You have to use JDM or Europe 5 speed gear box and B2600 bellhousing(it has 10* twist to it) Unless you can get a bellhousing from Bongo van(I call it the unicorn because it's over seas and getting it here in US would be a miracle), it's pretty much an FD gear box with RX8 tail housing that way it still bolts up to the factory PPF. The 6 speed has different bellhousing to trans pattern, so you can't do that. I hear 5 speed in stronger anyways. I wish we still had a good supply of JDM FE3 engines, I will rebuild this engine with stock pistons and rods and see how well it holds up.

Yeah it cost me the same as my damaged 2001 Miata. And RX8 is pretty much stretched and roomy Miata.

So you are telling us that fe3 and bell housing swap work easier then a with a rx7 turbo tranny where you need the bongo input shaft!!!!! Damn I love mazda for recycling parts !

From research I did, FD trans has longer input shaft than TII, bongo van bellhousing would of been ideal (same as b2600 but no weird twist) but good luck getting one here. So 5 speed RX8 trans($400+shipping) seemed to be the way to go.

Not too much progress has been made, the firewall is almost closed back up(I ran out of welding gas). I was planning on building full intake manifold from scratch but KIA intake somewhat fits, but it also block some heater/AC hoses.

Had to trim off some end tank features.

I'm debating if I should chop up stock intake and reused flange and portion of the runners.
