  • Setting TPS, fans won't turn off!

In the process of completing the MAF swap on my 94 ZE. Idles strong but extremely high. Go to do the fan method of setting the TPS as I've done several times in the past. However never on this car.

Jumped the ground and ten pins, turned the ignition to the on position and the fans came right on. Loosened the screws on the TPS and slowly started moving it expecting the fans to kick off. They didn't. Full rotation in either direction and nothing. Even took the TPS completely off and the fans stayed running. Opened the throttle all the way by hand and still no luck. The fans just won't go off.

Any ideas? Before the swap the car idled fine and the fans and coolant Gauges operated as normal. Please hit me with some ideas.

Wild guess: is the throttle butterfly actually fully closed at idle? Or did the throttle cable get snagged somehow so it is stuck open? (The fan is supposed to come on when the throttle opens and go off with the throttle closed, with ten and ground jumped.)

Someone may have messed with the idle screw on the throttle body. It is a very small stud and nut combination. Check that and let me know.

To clarify I meant the throttle stop screw. Not the idle screw. My fault. I have a ZE that came to me like that. Someone adjusted the throttle stop screw out to make the car idle faster.

Thanks for the responses. The throttle stop screw is as tight as it can be however it's still barely touching the throttle linkage. I was informed it shouldn't be touching at all.

I'm going to put a different TPS on there. Are they interchangeable throughout all years? I have one laying around but have no idea what it came out of?

The only one that I know is different on a KL is the 98-02 626 KLG4 TPS, which is a 3 pin TPS so you'd notice a difference.

                    Update:

Switched out the TPS and everything worked perfectly. MAF swap complete and she's idling smooth at 700-750. Didn't get a chance to take her for a spin but based on the throttle response alone At idle I'm expecting to be very pleased. Thanks for the help.

The freeway is where I notice the MAF swap the most. 3rd gear 55-60mph or so on up.
