  • Replace oil pump OR the oil pump plunger

When I first bought the car it had no ticking noise. I did a oil change and then it started to tick But It stopped ticking less Than a 100miles . So I did not think I Needed to replace the oil pump. I took the car to a friend of my dad that is a Mechanic Because I was moving and I needed to get it done timing belt replace and timing belt Titchener and water pump . He was having problems getting the car time to specs . He ran the car While it was out of time. Because he was drunk doing it he messed up my Valve cover gasket. so Then he used a bunch of gasket maker And it was in my oil And the car Was tick Again I checked the oil And there was some gasket maker on it so i did another oil change. The noise went away . Time to time I still find gasket maker On my oil dipstick Why is that? I did a oil change 5 Days ago and the noise is back and it's not going away . I don't have a lot of money but I want this fixed I'm not sure if I should Replace oil pump OR the oil pump plunger. i don't have to take the oil pump out If I replace the plunger right??? Could it have something to do with the gasket maker? I've been reading everything I can find on here about this. I just don't know Which one I should do? sorry for making it so long..

you can change just the plunger and spring if youre low on cash..that will stop the hla tapping..get the parts from Mazda ..no you dont have to remove the pump from the block if you change only the plunger and spring..its on the bottom of the pump under a small 1/2 inch retaining ring....you might have to pull the block stiffener im not sure i replaced the whole pump....try Trussville Mazda online, Marshall in parts..a little gasket chemicals in the oil shouldnt hurt unless excessive amounts dropped into the head while the cover was off

I'm 99% sure you have to either remove the block stiffener, or remove the entire pump to get to the relief valve. You don't have to remove the block stiffener to get the oil pump off. You just have to be careful when sliding the pump back on to the stiffener, and take extra care not to damage the front seal, or dislodge the o-rings from the pump. I didn't even touch the stiffener when I did my oil pump change, and I haven't had one drop of oil leak around my pump, or stiffener. Using high quality and high temp RTV, along with following suggested curing times is the key. Don't start you engine until you give the RTV around the oil pump 24 hours to cure. neilh2o might be correct, though; it might be easier to pull the stiffener away from the oil pump, rather than pulling the oil pump off of the stiffener.

is there a way to check the oil pump? After fixing a very very bad leak (from putting a gasket on the oil pan). It was driven about 10 miles on low pressure before i fixed it. My pressure is still really low even with no leaks. When i test drove it after fixing the leak the pressure started out fine but slowly dropped.

few other causes I could think of are
          1) Clogged oil filter? cant get that damned thing off!!
          2) I used 5w-30 after fixing the leak and it had 10w-30 which i heard will give a higher pressure than the 5w-30.

ps. just figured i would post here to see if I can test my oil pump or anything since its about replacing it or the plunger. If I should just make a new thread I will... just leme know.

my pump had 120k miles and there was only minor scoring on the oil pump body and cover..the oil pressure was a little over the line at idle...thats why i say you could replace only the plunger and spring..a lot cheaper fix....if youve changed oil on a regular basis like every 3k it should be fine

If i remove the pump do i have to replace the timing belt? How do you get the plunger out of the pump? Is the spring in there with the plunger? The only thing i have to get is a plunger, spring, oil pan gasket, high temp RTV. Is there anything else i need?
