  • How to- Testing, Diagnosing & adding HEI & Coils to 93-97 Distributers

I put together some easy to read and follow diagrams for the ignition systems on these cars.. This was all after some pain staking searching and research for my own cars. There is no single thread that just has all the information you need or diagrams that explain in detail.. So here it is. Painless Ignition systems diagnosis and modifications

The following is for Testing the 94/94 Distributer and its connections. You will need a test light and a Ohm meter

The following is for Testing the 95+ Distributer and its connections. You will need a test light and a Ohm meter

The following is for adding an external HEI Igniter Module to the 93/94 Distributer & Testing connections You will need a test light.

The Following is for Adding a External Igniter Module and External Coil to the 93/94 Distributer, along with Part #'s for the easiest (not cheapest) MSD parts.

About time someone got pissed off enough with the stock disty fiasco to make this more readable.

    Nice work

King6, i did the HEI mod with external coil using the instructions from the Club Protege web site. Well, i still dont have spark (common problem it would seem), anyways, i used your test suggestions you have above and came back negative on step 1 and 4 (testing of pins 3 and 1). so my question is im not sure where to look to check the ECU, ECM, or relays.....any help would be greatly appreciated

Is it possible to sticky this? Or put it in the archive section?

            On the 94-
You sure your test light works? Pin 3 should have power when the key is on, If it dont I would look for any bad fuses in the engine bay fusebox..or a bad relay, I dont know witch one it is exactly.

Pin 1 is the trigger signal from the ecu, either the ecu isnt receving a signal from the crank/cam sensors (bad crank or cam sensor, or wiring) or its not outputting the signal to the disty.. witch Ive found bad connections either in the harness or the ecu grounds to be a common problem.

my pgt runs but it runs with a hesitation, would the ohms test be the way I find out if my disty is weak an in need of replacing? or is the ohms test for some other purpose? basically I just want to know how to test for a weak disty.

                      http://gashware.com/probe/HEI/

I dumped all the HEI images and videos I had saved on my computer to the above directory. I'm not sure where I got the info or if it even correlates to this post, but thought it might help you.
