  • Idle Issue/Fan Issue CEL 09

Ok so I've been doing alot of research on here and I really haven't been able to find really much on this.

Anyway My car Idles like crap it has the CEL code 09. My fans are constantly on. Even when I unplug the 2 Coolant sensors. Isn't 09 that coolant sensor closet to the firewall? I got a sensor from the junkyard and put it in there and it still doesn't work. Maybe it is just another shot Sensor? Can this be a wiring problem? I'll take a picture later of the area, but the wires to the sensor by the filler are exposed showing the metal. Could that affect anything? But Yeah my car does idle poorly and is hard to start. When it warms up it starts right up and the idle is better. Can anyone give me some advice? I know I need a volt meter to check the sensors..

I will post a video of it later also.

    Car is a 1993 PGT with 155,xxx and is a 5speed.

Oh and hey being as my car has bad mounts could that cause any of the problems?(like the motor pulling out wires or something from moving?)

    Thanks...

Here is a link to a video

and as you can see in the pictures the wires being exposed at the bottom...

I forgot to show that when the sensors are unplugged The car misses on idle right when i unplug one or both, But the fans remain on.

Pretty sure the fan control sensor is the one in front of the filler neck. I got a replacement one at Advanced;just make sure you get the one called "radiator fan switch". Part number is WT661 or 3036162,cost less than $30.I'd definitely fix that wiring and check things over first before getting a new part.

How should I repair the wire part? Just cover it up with Wire tape? Or is that wire bad from being exposed and oxidized?

I'd strip it back to the factory loom and replace it if necessary. Don't use electrical tape though,it'll come unraveled as it gets hot. I've used that "self-vulcanizing" stretch tape with good results. As is,it could be shorting out against metal and picking up ignition noise which could potentially throw off the sensors' readings.

How can I tell if it needs replacing?

By dealing with the wiring first you rule that part of the equation out. Then reset your ecu. If your car is still showing the same symptoms afterwards, the code 9 etc then the sensor itself could be the culprit. Your cooling fan constantly running at high speed is another symptom.
