Oh goody! I love this topic!
First, open the hood, with the engine off, and look at the two VRIS actuators. They are now in the closed position.
1. Simple idle test. Now start the car and let it idle. VRIS#1 (passenger side) should now come open as soon as the engine starts, and VRIS#2 (driver's side) should stay closed. Now, disconnect both VRIS solenoids, and plug the wire that was in #1 solenoid into #2 solenoid . VRIS#2 should now open. (Unplugging the solenoids will cause an ecu code, of course). (The black connector normally goes to the #1 solenoid, and the brown connector to the #2 solenoid).
2. OBD1 Self-test: Let the car idle (to build up vacuum in the reservoir) then switch engine off, then short the TEN and GND pins in the little black "DIAGNOSIS" box (next to the fuse box under the hood) with a paper clip. Then have someone turn the ignition key to "on", while you watch the VRIS actuators. Both VRIS actuators should open briefly then close.
3. Road test: Disconnect VRIS #1 solenoid. Go for a drive, and use wide open throttle. You should notice low torque around 4,000rpm, then a sudden burst of torque at 4,250rpm, if VRIS#2 is working. Now reconnect VRIS#1 and repeat. You should now notice stronger torque at around 4,000rpm, so there is no longer the sudden jump in torque at 4,250rpm. If so, then VRIS#1 is working too.Last edited by NickR; February 5, 2006, 04:54 PM.

the paper test does not ensure you have adequate vac at WOT from the chambers/check valve and threfore the test above is more accurate in my opinion. The paper test is always good as a quick check but the one above obviously better.Supercharged - 94' PGT: ZE, MS2, W/M Injection, weight reduced, manual steering because weekend race car! mods and pics thread
