  • A few pics of my new RWD V8 project

Edit - for those reading from the beginning - plans have changed and the car will be powered by a KLZE - still RWD, but no LS1 for now. ZE upfront, FC 5-speed gearbox, modified FC driveshaft, stock wire harness/ecu.

Second try. The first one failed to produce any results.

I've been tinkering with the idea of an FD-supplied complete IRS since 2002 - it was time to put it to work.

The heart & soul - the 346 CU LS1, a 498lb all-aluminum V8 ('99-'02) delivering exactly what I was looking for. Mated to it is the Tremec T56 6-speed gearbox. The engine will actually sit almost 8 inches farther back toward the rear of the car than in this pic.

Car on the ground, rear frame strutctural complete. Much reinforcing awaits, as well as the refabbing of the upper strut mounts and replacement of the FD units with custom struts/springs.

    A few more notes:

I chose the components based on several categories. I wanted a road race car with a LOT of torque, RWD, lightweight engine, normally aspirated, a 6-speed gearbox, NOT expensive, easily modifiable. I found ALL of that in my choices.

"But it's no longer a Probe, you should have made it a KL-powered car for it to truly be great"

I made my choices on 2 simple premises:

    1) it's my car
    2) it's not your car.

If confused, refer to #1 or #2 for clarity.

I don't know when it's going to be done, but I hope by year's end it will be up and running. I'll update as necessary.

Okay, NJSR appears dead, pics reuploaded on photobucket. They may not be in the original order.

Matt's car is a drag car with a live axle. Dan's car will dominate Matt's on a road course and Matt's will dominate Dan's in a drag. But goddamn, why didn't you mention any of this shit at the mod day? Ok, I know we haven't really talked much or know each other too well but would it be possible for me to come up one day and help/take a look at this project. I've been pondering an FD IRS in the car but powered by a KL. This is awesome. BTW, how much did the IRS and LS1 cost?

Oh yea your "project V8" wasn't complete BS afterall

And also, Dan do you know how much a KL weighs in at with everthing on? IS the 498lb LS motor dry weight too?

thatd be quite impossible considering one will be powered by a I-6

That said, with all the "non-probe extra's", FD rear-end and GM powerplant & DT, why the probe shell? people drop the GM venerable small blocks into FD's all the time. Or you could have grabbed a 99 F-body that already had the motor - RWD trans and 6speed in it. I'm sure you already know this I'm just trying to get inside the head of a "destroyer of probes" as you so put it. Again, I can always appreciate the ingenuity. Good Luck with the project.

hmm, i'll take mine with a full interior and a completely stock exterior. Imagine the look on people's faces when they hear that small block fire up.

Very nice, very impressive! As soon as my house sells I'm going to start an LS1 powered '94 FD project, thought that's not nearly as unique as what you're attempting.

are you doing this to compete with Matt Maas's 2JZ probe? either way i love RWD projects by people that are capable of doing the work.
