It's been years since I was active here, and now it's time for me to finally say goodbye. My 91 GL has been claimed by an as-yet unidentified electrical problem. I'm hoping someone here will take her in before I donate or scrap her. The car is in Belleville, IL, just across the river from St. Louis, MO.
It's been a great car, but the problems are numerous:
Until the power steering and electrical problems started, this was a great car. (It still is a great car, just neglected!) I have all of the major maintenance/repair records, and some of the oil change records. It did receive regular oil changes, although less frequently than desired over the last few years, as I have driven an average of 1x / week. It's been on Valvoline Max-Life since around 100k.
I have misplaced the Illinois title. I will order a new one for any serious buyer.
Like i said, I've loved this car since buying it in 2000. I'd hate to see it go to the scrap yard. I hope there's still an active enough community here that someone will take her. I do not have the time to part out, sorry. $500 takes it!
- Twilight Blue Metallic exterior
- Crystal Blue interior
- '93 Base(SE) Wheels (3-spoke)
- Approximately 170k miles.
It's been a great car, but the problems are numerous:
- A mystery* drain on the electrical system kills the battery in under 24 hours
- Power steering fluid leaks from the rack and pinion. The car drives as if it doesn't have power steering and makes god-awful sounds when turning.
- Since the electrical problem started, the aftermarket head unit and amp have been on the fritz. I have disconnected them to ensure that they are not the cause of the drain, but I have not determined if either of them is still good.
- The Maaco paint job from 2003 is extremely faded and worn.
- There is a considerable rust spot directly below the black plastic trim on one of the doors.
- The housing to one of the side-view mirrors is cracked. (Mirror itself is fine.)
- The clip on the driver-side windshield wiper arm broke. It has been removed and the passenger-side wiper arm moved to the driver-side.
- Windshield is cracked.
- Fan does not blow air into passenger compartment.
- Passenger-side headlight motor does not work.
*NOTE: The electrical problem started with a new alternator over a year ago. Recently the electrical system began draining (lights dimming, radio out, etc.) while driving. The alternator was replaced again under warranty in February. Battery was also replaced. Two days later the car failed to start. It was jumped and taken to another shop who claimed a battery cable terminal was bad and replaced it. Car continued to lose power while driving and would not start. Another jump, another trip to the shop. Mechanics identified two systems as cause for the drain, removed fuses for power seatbelts and power seats, expected this to stop the battery drain. 24 hours later, car would not start. I have now given up.
I have misplaced the Illinois title. I will order a new one for any serious buyer.
