not that i have done this but if you read the the linked thread and the two on that one. you'll see the idea im getting in my head. . if that guy has a 323 with a kl he must be using a g25mr or had his original tranny fitted to the kl thats in his car. either way if escort tranny internals swap it might really be possible for us to have an affordable lsd aside the quafie.

    one more tranny link

        The following sounds very familiar...

At last, a cure of the broken tranny blues! Not only is the trans stronger, but it has better gearing for 1/4 mile bursts. To start, we rebuild the trans using a HD fully encased 4 spider gear differential, allowing for twice the torque capability for hard off the line launches. Next, we add a 4.59:1 ring and pinion to move the first four gears down lower to maximize acceleration to 100mph. We also use a stronger shift plate mechanism to cut down on bent shift parts, and add a taller 0.69:1 5th gear to keep a tall freeway gear for when you're not racing (imagine a 6 speed trans w/o a 5th gear).

I've never seen or done it, but according to what some other PT'ers have posted, you can pull out the internals of a '99 Ford Escort (and related years) and install it straight into the bell housing of a PGT. Supposedly, it's a direct swap. Not sure on the splines, but if it's a direct swap I would guess so.

Quaife is a rip off...screw buying that crap! I just received my Tochigi Fuji Sangyo 2 way LSD in the mail. I need to order a couple of diff bearings and i'm set to go. Once I get my 626 tranny i'll be pressing the old out, and pressing the new in. I'll take some pics during the process.

I thought about swapping the EGT tranny internals over, but I can't locate one for a reasonable price, and the gear ratios are about the same as the tranny i'm getting is anyways.

a 99 Escort uses a shittier tranmission than we use. They use F-series derived tranny's that I think are manufactured by ford (but use the F series mazda design). The only tranny you can swap over from an escort would be the BP powered escorts and tracers. The internals on those will swap right over.

More info on the Tochigi Fuji Sangyo LSD please!

Did you buy it from Mazda direct? I can't find any tech articles on it, except a few from Protege pages. But no tech specs. Got any info?

The entire cluster in my 96 PGT tranny is from a 1999 Escort ZX2 S/R. Its practically identical to the mazda tranny. The gear teath have a sharper cut to them and the sychros are redesigned with a few less triangles but its no SHITTIER than the stock 10 year old box that came in the 93. This past year it held more than 65 - 267HP/311TQ - 1/4 mile passe and still shifts like butter.

The only tranny part I had problem with was the pin that goes through the final drive. My phantom grip decided to wear and break that pin sending it through the tranny case. That pin and final drive is out of my original PGT tranny.

The only weak gear on the tranny is 5th yet its no weaker than the mazda 5th gear. I dont beat on 5th gear.

99% of the problems with the PGT tranny is worn synchros causing grinding noise and missed shifts. This can be corrected with a low mileage escort tranny.

BTW - if you purchase a tranny rebuild kit from Anaheim Gear its simply a sychro and bearing kit for a 97 2.0L escort!

I also posted something about this in the oil thread. You can get an escort LSD from Quaife for about $1,000 that's at least $400 cheeper then the Probe LSD from Corksport.

But I got to thinking afterwords that when Jeff said the internals will swap he may only be referring to the Input and Output shafts and gears. the Diff itself may not swap over. I have no clue weather it does or not, just throwing out possibilities.

I really want an LSD or at least a stronger tranny cause I really don't care to drop that damn thing any more then neccissary.

I havne't disassembled a 97+ generation escorts transmission myself, but I am a long time member on ERDT. I know the 2nd gen Escorts with the 1.9's use the crappier F-series transmissions, and reading about them swapping the 2.0 SPI motor from the 3rd gens into their cars, they mentioned the transmission on the 2.0 is the same F-series gearbox (which is much weaker).

I wasn't referring to ZX2's (especially the SR which has a high perf clutch, and other goodies) when I said "the escorts use shittier transmissions". The 2.0 and 1.9 models DO use a weaker design, and it would be foolish to swap it over to our bellhousing. Not only are the spline counts smaller, the shaft diameters are also smaller and you'd need to use a smaller clutch designed for those transmissions. But the sycnhro's are the same size on either F or G series tranny.

BUT I have heard that the ZX2's with the Zetec motors use a newer design Ford transmission that was derived from the mazda G series, but uses a different bellhousing that won't swap to any of the 2nd gen Escorts or B-series powered Mazda cars. They use the same size axles and clutch as the Escort GT's, so I'm sure the internals would swap over to our transmission.

Jeff: how are the synchro's holding up so far? Also, are the gear ratios shorter or taller? I was going to buy one of those synchro kits from anaheim this week.

And I paid $440 for my LSD, plus another 70 in new bearings. I'm just hoping it won't be a pain in the ass to install it.

Well I have a spare PGT tranny disassembled and I have the final drive and spider gears from the escort tranny.....I could do some spline/teeth counting and check things out.

I used my PGT final drive because it had been modified and treated. If I am not mistaken the pin that is in the car now is also the Escort final drive pin.

FYI - 1999 did see a revision in the manual gearbox that resulted in far fewer transmission failures for the escort.

                          97 - present Escort 5-Speed final drive is 4.105:1

                          1st - 3.307
                          2nd - 1.833
                          3rd - 1.31
                          4th - 1.03
                          5th - 0.795

                          93-97 PGT tranny final - 4.388:1 MX6 - final - 4.11:1 (Really 4.105 just like the escort)

                          1st- 3.307
                          2nd- 1.833
                          3rd- 1.31
                          4th- 1.03
                          5th- 0.795

Even 5th gear is the same ratio....so all you yahoos can forget about swapping out 5th gear.

The sychros are holding up just fine.....But hey most sychros will last 50k even under the most extreme abuse. What I am getting at is instead of paying some jackhole a grip of cash to press bearings on and off or instead of purchasing a high mileage PGT tranny.....find yourself a super low mileage escort tranny 99 or better. This will save you money as well as provide you with a solid box when you are finished.

                            Cool thanks for the info.

You could also always get one of the 2.0 Protege transmissions and swap that in there, they are G15M-R boxes and have similar ratios to the Escorts. These came in the 01-present FS-DE 2.0 powered Proteges.

                            Here are the specs

                            1st gear

                            1.842:1

                            3rd gear
                            1.310:1

                            0.755:1

                            4.105:1
