  • 4.8L Probe LS :)

Well, So as some of you know, I bought Matt Maas' RWD Probe Chassis, and three months ago I finally started to work on it. It literally sat in my driveway for nine months!

The story started with the chassis, which I picked up for what I feel was a complete and utter steal!(thanks Matt!) $1500

Eight months later, on a local auto forum I saw someone selling a 4.8L Chevy LS motor. HMMM..... $200

So I started doing research on what I wanted to do with said motor, because chevy truck guys were already breaking the 600whp barrier on the stock motor(turboed of course). So, some minor parts were bought- ls1 intake, injectors, and cam, ls2 timing chain, ls6 valvesprings, and arp rod bolts. $163

Well now the motor is internally sound for some abuse, time for an oil pan, this was tricky due to the custom steering rack going across the bottom back by the firewall. Found out that the GTO oil pans are reverse, with the sump up front-Score! $150 brand new

I needed to do some minor milling to the oil pan, as you can see in the pics, but now it fits, like a glove! $free

So, motor is good, top to bottom, now for a transmission. My buddy just happened to be parting out his car, so I picked up a 700R4, built, with stall, reverse manual valve body, B&M shifter, and aluminum driveshaft. $800

I know what your thinking. Auto! WTF!?!?!? Well, let me explain myself. Sitting in my garage I have a R154 Toyota supra 5sp tranny out of an 88 turbo, and after buying the adaptor plate and bellhousing, I was already at $850, still needing a custom clutch, slave cylinder, master cylinder, and clutch pedal, which would be an extremely tight fit now, due to the roll cage. So, for ease of pain and time and money, I chose the auto.

Now, I have the motor, tranny, now I need brains. Once you start getting into the scenes, you start to meet people and make new friends, one of mine happened to be turning his 04 GTO into a carbed motor, so I picked up his ECU and wiring harness. $275

So, on to the little manual labor that I have done. So far the motor mounts are made, and the 12 gal fuel cell is mounted. I am in the process of ripping the wiring harness apart so I only have the sensors that I will be using. I will be buying HPtuners for tuning software, but I am biding my time looking for one on sale, cause I don't want to bite the bullit and spend $600 on the software directly from them.

Also, doing all this work for just a 4.8 would be kinda silly, since I was already hitting 11's FWD, so obviously there is more. This motor will be turboed, using the MasterPower T70, which has been shown to push the power levels I want to run.

But first and foremost, the car will run N/A until all the bugs are worked out.

Sorry for the long read, and here are some teaser pics, which happen to be the only ones available right now, as I have been doing car work for other people to help get extra funds in these times.

Thanks for looking! and there will be more pics, as soon as I finish the 3400 swap in a 93 cavy.

    On to the pics:

is the engine going to sit so far back like that? It for could go any farther back it could be considered a mid engine =) Glad to see someone is continuing this project. Someone has got to make a rwd probe. I understand it takes alot of work...but its not impossible

Its not a PROBLEM. It's a PROBE LUM

Dueces your the man! Looking forward to following your progress. I kinda wanted to add some support bars like you got there going to the strut towers but thought what damage it would do to my Teins if I hit something at a high rate of speed. Hey want to ask, do you have access to a machine shop, not that I need anything, just curious as this would net a greater chance of you finishing this.

Yeah, I grew up with a guys kids back in my home town, and he has conventional machines that he WANTS me to keep using. He doesn't get out to use them much because he is too busy at work. So whenever I have something to machine I just give him a call. It's not a full machine shop, but close.

And yes, it will sit where it is in the engine bay. These are pics of the motor mounted in place. I actually took these pics when I was getting ready to make a tranny mount for the toyota tranny, but it will be the same location regardless.

Also one thing I forgot to mention, all LS motors mount the same way, so if the 4.8L Turbo isn't enough, I can always build a 6.0L with 6.2L Heads and boost that! That would be a $1000 version of the 6.2L that comes in the 2010 Camaro SS

The 4.8L is the smallest of the LS motors, the 5.3L is the same as the 4.8, only it has a 9mm longer stroke, then the 5.7, 6.0, 6.2, and even the mighty 7.0 and 6.2 supercharged......

            Thanks for the responses!

Better pics will come, those were just what I had on my phone. I am not a picture person, but now that the block is painted all nice and what not, I'll get some better pics.

I forgot to mention that the roller chassis came with a 9in rear end, complete with gears and axles, just incase anyone was wondering what rear it had.

Oh, and Extreme props to Mr Maas for the design of the engine bay!!! the top radiator support is removable, making for about a ten minute motor change, Ha Ha.

check out sikky motorsports. thats who made most of the LS stuff we used when we swapped a 6L ls into my friend 95 240sx. the headers they sell for the 240sx will probably fit pretty good in the probe. the oil pan they sell would have been a good purchase too. it offers more clearence then even the GTO one.

Don't need headers. I will be using the stock truck logs, reverse so they face forward. It won't be NA for long, so I will just route the piping like I would turbo, just without the turbo.

As for the Oil Pan, After I milled it, there really isn't anything that can have better clearance, it's less than two inches from the bottom of the block, IIRC.

They do make bad ass kits for the 240's though, but I plan to make everything that I need myself.

I hope to have it running N/A by the middle of february, then I will have plenty of time to build the turbo setup.

Damn thats nice work so far. Everything sounds to be coming together pretty well. Cant wait to see the end result! Gonna be FAST!

I think I remember Maas saying that only the auto trans would fit but dont remember why. You think you could have got a manual to go with that motor?
