Well, So as some of you know, I bought Matt Maas' RWD Probe Chassis, and three months ago I finally started to work on it. It literally sat in my driveway for nine months!
The story started with the chassis, which I picked up for what I feel was a complete and utter steal!(thanks Matt!) $1500
Eight months later, on a local auto forum I saw someone selling a 4.8L Chevy LS motor. HMMM..... $200
So I started doing research on what I wanted to do with said motor, because chevy truck guys were already breaking the 600whp barrier on the stock motor(turboed of course). So, some minor parts were bought- ls1 intake, injectors, and cam, ls2 timing chain, ls6 valvesprings, and arp rod bolts. $163
Well now the motor is internally sound for some abuse, time for an oil pan, this was tricky due to the custom steering rack going across the bottom back by the firewall. Found out that the GTO oil pans are reverse, with the sump up front-Score! $150 brand new
I needed to do some minor milling to the oil pan, as you can see in the pics, but now it fits, like a glove! $free
So, motor is good, top to bottom, now for a transmission. My buddy just happened to be parting out his car, so I picked up a 700R4, built, with stall, reverse manual valve body, B&M shifter, and aluminum driveshaft. $800
I know what your thinking. Auto! WTF!?!?!? Well, let me explain myself. Sitting in my garage I have a R154 Toyota supra 5sp tranny out of an 88 turbo, and after buying the adaptor plate and bellhousing, I was already at $850, still needing a custom clutch, slave cylinder, master cylinder, and clutch pedal, which would be an extremely tight fit now, due to the roll cage. So, for ease of pain and time and money, I chose the auto.
Now, I have the motor, tranny, now I need brains. Once you start getting into the scenes, you start to meet people and make new friends, one of mine happened to be turning his 04 GTO into a carbed motor, so I picked up his ECU and wiring harness. $275
So, on to the little manual labor that I have done. So far the motor mounts are made, and the 12 gal fuel cell is mounted. I am in the process of ripping the wiring harness apart so I only have the sensors that I will be using. I will be buying HPtuners for tuning software, but I am biding my time looking for one on sale, cause I don't want to bite the bullit and spend $600 on the software directly from them.
Also, doing all this work for just a 4.8 would be kinda silly, since I was already hitting 11's FWD, so obviously there is more. This motor will be turboed, using the MasterPower T70, which has been shown to push the power levels I want to run.
But first and foremost, the car will run N/A until all the bugs are worked out.
Sorry for the long read, and here are some teaser pics, which happen to be the only ones available right now, as I have been doing car work for other people to help get extra funds in these times.
Thanks for looking! and there will be more pics, as soon as I finish the 3400 swap in a 93 cavy.
