  • Whats the story of how Myrtle Madness began?

I for one didn't own a Probe until June 2000, never was part of the Probe community till I registered on ProbeTalk May 23, 2000. My first meet was DC Dyno in the early months of 2001. I have only been to two Myrtles (Five and Seven)

What brought Myrtle Madness into existence? What were the early days like? What things did you do, where did you go, what did you eat, who did you meet etc.

I remember in January 2002 I found a post on the Probe Performance group about the in Columbia SC at Fudrucker's which I noticed Greg Martin referred to as the Grandfather meet of Myrtle Madness.

    The Post:

    From: Greg Martin
    Date: Tue Nov 4, 1997 7:12 am
    Subject: The Meet

Well, guys, it's a week and a few days from the next Meet, and it's been
pretty quiet. I expect to hear more noise about it; especially since
it's looking to be one of the biggest East Coast meets yet. So, so
far we're looking to meet and eat (please?) at 1 pm on November 15th at
Fudruckers in Columbia S.C., and then hit the strip? Don't worry, Blak,
your car won't be the slowest one there, I may beat you there
Unless someone is bringing a 4 cylinder Probe (And all of you 4 cyl
owners are MORE than welcome to). We've got about 7 people defintiely
showing up and six more thinking about it. Depending on what everyone's
schedule is and what the turnout is it may (?) go to Sunday? [that was
a question, I'm not sure] So Anyway....................... If you're
definitely going, still planning on going, or are still undecided about
going post back to the list and voice some opinions on stuff. Feel
welcome to bring anyone you want to the meet; be it girlfriends, wives,
best friends, or even some chump from the street that told you your car
was cool. Also feel free to gather up some other Probes in your area
and convoy. I'm getting a little carried away, but it's all good.
    So let us hear it.

    Later on,
    Greg

So please those who know any of the early Myrtle details feel free to share I would love to here em!

Heh, I was THERE! That meet was pre-Probetalk. It was organized/advertised via the email lists. Imagine that there were only about 30 people or so.
I have pictures here. 1998; What a good year.

You were definitely at the first Myrtle Madness we had (MM98), but that meet referenced in the post above happened in November '97 in Columbia, SC. There were 4 cars and 5 people at that meet. I was there.

A year later we decided to have the meet again, and we moved it to Myrtle Beach to make it more entertaining.

Yup, I knew about the '97 Columbia meet. I mean, not at the time. I found out later that it was the precursor to Myrtle.
