  • Turbo Claims Another Victim..

Which really in the end would be me... I'm super-frustrated at this point..

This is my 3rd friggin' transmission to blow up in about a year.. Believe me I DO NOT BEAT on it!! I shift at or under 5,000rpm IF I'm going to 'get on it', and that really isn't all that often.

Today's story of transdescruction occured while getting of a highway and onto a secondary road (shifting from 2nd to 3rd) and between 3500-4000rpm, just about ready to put it into 4th and BOOM!!! CLACKITY, CLACKITY, CLACKITY!!! I thought the whole thing exploded.. Ends up I limped home in 4th timing the traffic lights to green the whole way. I was accompanied by the grinding sounds of whatever was left of 3rd mixing itself around introducing itself to other components within the gearbox.

Not sure what to do next at this point.. I was actually going to sell it next year thinking it would make it easily through the summer with this gearbox and new Southbend clutch. Until it turned to confetti about an hour ago my opinion is that it was better and smoother than my original trans was..

    Oh well.

I think I'll just let it sit a while.. Maybe someone will be parting out another car and have a good 5-speed for me to buy and maybe add PAR gears to.

Not sure.. I might just sell it as is, but I'm sure I'll take a beating on it..

N/A is the way to go! anything else is just disaster waiting to happen IMHO.

some headers, nice exhaust is all I need and it's plenty of fast for me.

guess you learned your lesson uh? j/k..

    so....what are your plans now?

At least transmissions are fairly cheap? Just trying to point out the bright side.

Sorry to hear about your luck.. There for a while I was blowing up gearboxes like crazy too.. Just out of curiosity what kind of gear oil are you running in the trans you are using? I know ive said this before in other threads but ever since I switched to royal purple gear oil I havent had an issue.. I run my street car at 15psi and dont shift until redline and it has just about every mod you could think of.. Its this car in this link

The page hasnt been updated in a long time and a few things have changed with the car as far as the turbo and a few other things like colt cams etc etc but all things that have been changed have been an upgrade..

Do you have some for of a transmission saver? Run some gtx gear and a lsd?

I still use Mt 90 oil in mime.

same here, MT-90. I do have the trans-saver installed and traction bars (to eliminate wheel hop, which they do well.

This brings up a good question.. Will and LSD HELP or HURT the torque load on the gears? My suspicion is that they hurt since you're introducing twice the amount of friction BACK into the box with the addition of another tire in the mix.

Assuming this is a rational thought..

Thanks for the morale support guys! I found a good gearbox from Fordprobegt67 and I'm having the car repaired now so in a couple of weeks it'll be back on the road!

The shitty Transaxle is why I ended up parting mine out. Just got tired of dropping the damn thing and replacing it.

True you can get a used box at a U-pull it yard for about $100, but the time and energy to keep doing it was too much.

Not sure an LSD would help or hurt 3rd, but it definitely helps that stupid cross shaft in the diff from sliding out/breaking.

Reducing weight should help, along with PAR gears, but depending on your HP/TQ/Weight it may still be just a matter of time.

A completely new transaxle is what's really needed, just too bad know one has figured out how to get one put in that will hold up, for a reasonable price.
