  • KL swapped 323 build

Well I guess I might as well put a little build thread up here..

My car is a 92 mazda 323 with a KLDE swap in it.. I have a loose 5 year plan on building the car up to be competitive in SMF class for autocross.. I say its a loose plan cause we all know how tight money can be when you have kids and a morgage to pay for...

Some specs about the car when I first bought it... I picked it up from a friend of mine who had done 90% of the swap...

    Drivetrain:
KLDE swap.. the motor was used with unknown miles on it...
    under drive pully
    fidanza flywheel
626/Mx6 ebay header modified to clear the frame
    2.5" exhaust system
engine bay wiring harness from a 93 mx3 GS
stock 626 computer with matching MAF
Transmission is stock from an mx3 GS
    CAI
    power steering delete
    no a/c
    91 - 94 cavalier 2.2L rad
cooling fan out of some hyundia
    battery relocated to the trunk..

    Suspension:
    Tokico blue's
    H&R springs
    mx3 rear control arms
    mx3 front control arms
white line 22mm rear sway bar for an mx3
stock mx3 gs front sway bar
    manual steering rack from
cork sport front and rear upper strut braces
    unknown rear tie bar
    factory mx3 front lower brace...

    Brakes:
mx3 gs front and rear disc brake set up
    escort gt brake booster
    nothing special for pads

    Interior:
95 mx3 body harness mixed matched to any 323 specific plugs for tail lights and such
    mx3 front seats
mx3 gauge cluster fit inside the stock 323 dash...
    radio and all speakers deleted

    tires:
old old set of 205/50/14 toyo RA1 race slicks on a set of nissan sentra 14" rims

Some pics of the car when I first brought it home...

First mods were simple.. I had to get the motor running right... turns out my friend who built the car screw up the egr system... I found out he lost the egr control solenoid.. Its no where to be found... He had the egr vacuum lines hooked up the egr release solenoid..

This caused the car to run ruff/miss fire/stall once warmed up... For the time being all I have done is disconnected all the vacuum lines for the egr system... Soon enough I'll have to get them hooked back up to pass emissions...

The speedo also didn't work.. somewhere in the wiring the speed sensor wasn't wired to the gauge cluster... I found out what pins the signal was supposed to go to and just ran my own 2 wires straight from the speed sensor to the gauge cluster...

I also needed to make the car a little quieter inside for my son... The exhaust was originally built for an mx3... The 323 has a longer rear bumper so this made the tip stay stuck under the back of the car... With the tip stuck under the rear bumper there was a bad drone inside the car... This was easy to fix... I cut the tip off and extended the pipe out from under the rear bumper... This cut the drone in half and made driving the car a lot nicer...

While I was at the shop I chopped up the stock steering wheel to make a custom adapter and fit my grant wheel on the car...

since I have a 4 year old son I also had to source out some rear seats... I ended up picking up a really nice mx3 rear seat set up with seat belts for pretty cheap and installed them...

With the car road worthy I just had to take it out and have some fun with it...

    Her first autocross..

My gf was just as excited as I was about the car.. Yes she races it with me..

took my mom for a ride along..

After all the autocrossing fun I still needed to street drive the car... The toyo RA1's that I got with the car weren't going to do since they are full out racing slicks not street tires...I had a set of 17" 5 zegen 5zr rims with tires kicking around from my past 323's so I made them fit..

    still more to come..

More autocross fun all summer long and into the winter...

To wrap up 2010 I jacked the car up to stock height for the winter on some stock springs and struts.. I stuck some hankook winter ipike tires on the sentra rims and took the car out to the totem TSD ralley...

Yeah I really love this women... here she is navigating for me and working hard at our pace notes...

Unfortunately the rally didn't end so well for me... The first night stage I hit a patch of black ice under the snow and went off the road... It all happened so amazingly slow... I had time to peddle the throttle, play with the ebrake, play with the steering, look over at my gf tell her to hold on we were going off the road... Off the road we went...

After waiting for sweep for over an hour, they spent another hour and a half pulling me out... thankfully everything was ok, but I had enough for the weekend.. My gf and I ended up going home the next morning...

Little did I know I was close to disaster... I knew the body got beat up.. I had hit a tree just behind the drivers door.. I also hit a tree and broke the rear tail light.. Plus a thick bush had gotten wedge between the front tire and the fender, bending the fender... What I didn't know was the damage I did under the car...

I bent the oil pan, tore a hole in the body somewhere around the back seat just missing some brake lines.. Bent the gas tank pretty good and almost tore a hole in it..

This event wrapped up 2010 for me and the car... Come 2011 I had a few changes...

First change came during the spring.. when it was time to swap out the suspension I traded in the tokico blues and the springs for a set of coil overs that I got for cheap of a GTR...

        fronts

        rears

With getting the wheel alignment set the car handled much much better... I had found before the tokico's and springs were to soft.. They were great for daily driving but thats not what I wanted... The coil overs are unknown brand.. don't know what the spring rates are but so far they have performed much better...

I also changed out the battery box that the car came with for a moroso sealed box and added a proper kill switch for the car... This made me legal to race at the local 1/4 mile track...

The car didn't do as well as I had hoped in the 1/4 mile... my best run to date
        R/T .... 0.661
        60' .... 2.170
        330 .... 6.287
        1/8 .... 9.713
        MPH .... 72.24
        1000.... 12.250
        1/4 .... 15.250
        MPH .... 88.73

The car has always felt kind of flat and lacking of power... Sometimes it pulls really hard and other times it feels like it has something thats holding it back.. I have looked at all the basics... Timing has been played with.. Dizzy crapped out at one point and has been replaced...VIRS solenoids work... tune up is good.. fuel pressure is good... filter is new... ehxaust isn't that old...

        more to come...

Wrapping up this summer I picked up some new goodies... First up were a set of custom control arm bearings for the front...

I went threw some fun getting them installed.. There is some differences in the rear brackets on an mx3 that know one really knew about...

Next up came a new rear wing... This came off a canadian SE...It still needs some pain work, but so does the rest of the car...

I tryed to installed these new goodies but ran into problems with bolts that go threw the control arms and the rear spindles... I couldn't get the bolts out so I ended up putting all the rear suspension back together... I'll install the rear control arms next summer...

          my rear suspension pulled apart....

Over the winter I'll have some fun with a transmission project...On order for it is a KAAZ limited slip diff... It's on its way from japan as KAAZ USA didn't have any instock...

Unfortunately when I tore this one down it was a disaster.. Just about everything went in the garbage.. Hopefully soon I'll pick up another transmission thats rebuildable..

I also happen to have a gear train from a B6T transmission I had sitting around... a little comparison...

I have heard it wont fit, but I'll play with it a bit this winter when I get bored and see what I can do... I really want the 3.85 final drive of the B6T.. this will get net me the kind of top speed I need in 2nd gear for autocross so I can avoid shifting...

          more to come...

3.83's if it works then I want. Just remember the input has to match the output which then has to match the ring gear. If you can get the entire assembly in a KL trans case and be able to close the 2 halves of the case then awsome.

That's a nice looking car! Digging that you're doing your own thing with it, having fun, and getting the lady involved!

Some video's for the fun of it...

All of my videos can be seen on my youtube channel... There is some stuff of the 4 wheeling fun I have had as well with my jeep as well...
                http://www.youtube.com/user/crazycan...5?feature=mhee

This one is from the first time I ever ran a lapping day at the local track... The car handled really well but unfortunately the cavalier rad is to small.. I was plagued with over heating problems... I could only get about 3 or 4 hard laps in before I'd have to back off and run the rest of the session at half pace... The first lap I am just warming up.. I don't open it up till somewhere around the 1.50 mark... both laps you'll see a couple good mistakes I made...

This is a fun autocross one... Every year the local club puts on a special event.. Its a team enduro.... You get into teams for 4 people.. Every team needs at least 1 novice... Everyone gets 1 shot to run the course.. You do 3 - 4 laps of the course and finish... Everyones index time is added together and the team with the lowest time wins...
                This is my enduro run...

This is a video from the TSD rally I did last november... A friend of mine put the video together so there is more then just me on the video... The first 2 min is video from my car... You can see just how slippery the conditions are... This kind of rally is done on open roads fyi.... This year I am better prepared.. I have snow tires with studs..

Christmas came early... 8) once again thanks to JPmotorsports for the hook up... I went to the junk yard this weekend and picked up a spare transmission for the rebuild as well... Looks like this winter is going to be busy...

Good thing my GF isn't around... This thing stinks like gear oil and posi additive...

They say on the box to read the instructions first... hahaha... Thankfully there is some english at the back..

A bunch of different reasons... My own experiences with gear style diffs threw my job, talking to local autocross guys who have been competitive for a number of years... talking to some different road race guys...Also getting to codrive a friends FSP prepped Focus before and after his torsen LSD install..

All came to the same conclusion... With a gear style diff if you are lifting an inside tire they act like opens... In autocross since you are constantly under hard cornering inside tires tend to get pretty light the diffs don't work well...You can tune some of that out with suspension work, but I opted to spend the extra bucks for something that should work more consistently...

Doesn't mean Mfactory isn't a good diff... I believe if you are doing drag racing it'd be the diff of choice....

I have really neglected to up date this... Well here is the winter fill in...

The rear control arms never did get installed last year.. My spindle bolts were sized so I couldn't separate the rear control arms from the spindles.. Since this car sees winter duty and I like to have some fun with it I didn't want to destroy my stock rear control arms... The tubular ones went back on my shelf for the winter...

The car got winterized in november.. I installed all my stock supsension along with a new set of studded hankook ipikes..

                          Winterized..

Why do I winterize the car?? So I can go out and have fun... I ran the thunderbird TSD rally back in feb..

Now its time for summer and autocross season... Time to get away from the soft comfortable stock ride.. I started off trying to install everything at my work.. unfortunately I ran into problem with the rear links and had to finish the install at home..

Here was my pile of parts.. Coil overs/Mx3 front control arms with sphearical bearings installed/17's/and some of the pieces for the new rear links..

Getting the car ready on the hoist.. I had to haul ass at this point since I could only spend a couple hours at the shop before I had to leave, so I didn't take any install pictures..

The car backed into the garage part way so I could tackle the rear suspension at home now... Everything all apart...

stupid stock rear spindle and control arms are siezed together.. Even with a press at work I couldn't get the bolt to budge.. In order to set everything up for this summer and still have something stock to go back to in the winter I had to buy a different set of rear spindles..

New rear spindle, new control arms going in..

This is a quick and dirty end link I made up.. Would have looked a lot nicer if I had female rod ends.. Unfortunately at the time I was buying the rod ends I couldn't get any female ones locally and I was in to much of a rush to wait and order a set in... Oh well this is holding and working fine so far...

Passenger side completely installed with the car on the ground...

                            Front
                            Caster L + R = 3 deg
                            Camber L = -2.6 deg
                            R = -2.0 deg
Front toed in = 1/16" total

                            Rear camber L = -1.8 deg
                            R = - 1.6 deg
Rear toed out = 3/16" total

Well todays autocross went pretty well... The car ran strong and was a lot of fun to drive..It was the first time I have run the new and improved pad set up.. It took a couple runs to get used to.. The asphalt on the new part of the pad is very sticky with really good bite.. The old side of the pad is pretty slick... I massacred a few cones my first couple runs getting used to the transitions... Pictures to prove it to.. haha...

At the end of the day I found some carnage on my car that wasn't related to the cone massacres... My RF strut has completely blown out and puked oil out all over... I hadn't seen anything hitting the ground, but its all over the car behind the tire... I guess this means I'll have to upgrade a little sooner then I planned...

The 2 only pics I took of the day... Videos coming soon...

The aftermath of my blown out strut at the end of the day...

Cone massacre... Kinda hard to tell but there are 3 cones stuck in there..
