  • Bad grinding noise

On my black PGT, there's this bad grinding coming from what sounds like the middle of the passenger side, but it's really hard to tell exactly where it's coming from. I'm pretty sure it's a bearing that's going bad, but not sure which it could be. I don't think it's the wheel bearing, because the wheel doesn't feel the least bit sloppy, spins fine when jacked up, and doesn't seem to make any noise when I spin it. And it's definitely not the brakes. I havn't driven the car in 4 weeks because I havn't felt safe with it.

Anyone have any idea what it could be or what specific bearing it may be? I'd like to fix it soon since I've been driving my good PGT now as my daily driver.

Is it there when engine idling and car not moving? If so, possible accessory drive belt tensioners known to go bad and sound like metel to metal bad bering noise.

No, it's when the car is moving. Faster the car's moving, the louder it is.

Is something dragging on the ground?
What happens if you raise up the front of the car on stands, and run it in gear?

Of course nothing is dragging on the ground. I'm not a mechanical rookie here. I'm just trying to figure out which bearing it is, I'm 85% sure it's a bearing. I'll probably have to pull off the pass. side axle and just try to see which is bad. I would have just liked to order the replacement parts prior so that I can just fix it right away.

In my '84 Jetta it was the differential going bad. Made 7k without any problems although it was annoying as hell. Had the same problem with the rear diff in the benz. Sounded like sticking a stick in a bicycle wheel spokes when accelerating.

                  sound

just a ? have you checked the rear wheel also to make sure that it is not that bearing and try the idea that was put up there also put it on jacks and put it in gear and see if it does the same then you can get an idea on where it is coming from.

Last time I had a bad grinding noise, my alternator belt was ripping - that only last a few minutes and you notice the difference. I'd suggest lubbing your belts and checking in your wheel wells.
