well my friend has a 93 pgt that just started to knock. He parked it and i went to look at it and i am pretty sure he spun a rod bearing. So i was thinking about putting all new ones in for him. Can i just pull the oil pan off and do this job or do the heads have to come off?

It could be either a bad rod bearing or a bad wrist pin. i don't know how to tell the difference between the two by ear, but I know my ZE has a knock for sure.
I don't think you have to remove the oil pump and timing belt, but I could be wrong.
I believe you can access the rod bearings by removing the oil pan and the oil shield. after that is the bottom of the crank and the rod bolts are reachable from there. I took apart a klde not too long ago and it looked possible to get at it all with minimal dis-assembly.DRIVE IT LIKE YOU BUILT IT!!

Remove the Y-pipe, pan, oil pick up tube, windage tray and voila you have rod bolts starring at you. Buy your self a caliper to measure the rod journal that spun it should be 2.0843"-2.0848". Any smaller then that, chances are if it has been run a bit like that then the journal is toast. Measure the journal in more then one place and turn the crank around to measure it from a different position. It has to be perfectly round. If you suspect found a low spot then use plastiguage to know for sure cause it's hard to read the micrometer when underneath the motor.Last edited by mac1; March 11, 2011, 12:24 PM.1993 Mercury tRacer :Vitara & mFactory: In progress 2020
