cool
Good to pick one of these up, last of the rotoaries as mazda killed the line for now till future development of its epa standard 1.6 rotary. No more Rx8's coming to the US.

Need a chip or parts for your 1st gen GT go here----->Fordprobeparts.com
woot! Congrats! My 04 now has 71k miles; 50k on the engine, 40k on the trans, have made it a whopping 30K on the current cat (record), etc...it's fairly slow; my subaru is so much faster it's silly....but...the rx8 is more-fun to drive.
What did that set you back if you don't mind me asking? I'm contemplating possibly grabbing one of them next summer.
Yours looks sharp, looks like all the bells and whistles too.
sticker was 21 I think. Was a CPO with 29k on it. Talked them down to 18 with out any issue. Had I known how bad they wanted to get rid of it I could have gotten it for less

Between you & Goat, I don't know 1 person that's been able to make 100k on their original motor. And I certainly don't know one person that's had a reliable rotary. I'm NOT TRYING to start a shit fit with anyone, but that's really not a stellar record, there. No wonder they discontinued the series.

From what I understand, when maintained right, they can be as reliable as any engine.
1993 MX3, KLZE & 5 Speed Swap
2008 Mazda 3 Sedan Sport
a local named nick is on his 3rd engine. and the sad part is hes uptight, and has never beat on the car a single bit. his history with his rx8 has kept me from even looking at them.
but i love the look of the cars. id just have to ruin it by slapping a more reliable drivetrain in it.

From what I understand, its the 04 ones that have an issue. They stopped making them due to crappy MPG and emissions.
There's nothing that says they are "supposed to be driven at higher RPMs", that's just where the power is. Also, since rotaries naturally run rich it's good to run it wide open to redline at least once every few times you drive it. You don't want any significant carbon building up, retaining heat, and then causing uncontrolled combustion (ie, detonation).
Hey Ant, what about me? What's so unreliable about mine? Sure, it's built, but I have yet to have a single issue with it since going single. It takes any kind of beating I can throw at it (takes 24 psi on a daily basis), doesn't drink a drop of oil (aside from premix ), starts every time, and has never left me stranded. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Like ANY design, it has its pros and cons. Sure it doesn't make gobs of torque @ low RPMs. Sure it doesn't get stellar gas mileage. (I get around 22 hwy, 20 mixed, and 17-18 city). What I'm saying is the characteristics of the motor are indeed different, but that's part of what makes the car. Mazda did that BY DESIGN so they could fit the compact motor behind the front axle for 50/50 weight distribution and a lower CG. Slap a turbo on it and it'll make plenty of torque and power for the weight of the car, maintain/tune it properly, and she'll be fine. I know they're not your cup of tea, though.
We go for a ride sometime soon though. Might just change your mind. After all, last time you rode in the car I believe I was only making 370RWHP, maybe less.
