The possible issue with that are the length of the axles but the newer axles might work if you had an adapter plate made. That's what I was originally looking for but then I decided to research the Escort tranny info.

I'm running out of things to say right now but in the next few weeks I should have everything together and ready to try it out.

Axles on our cars are 28 spline 1.135 inch diameter at the spline.

I think most escort/focus stuff is 24 or 26 cept for the mazdaspeed proteges.. IIRC our axles wouldn't fit in their diff, so thats something to check.

im about to pick up an mtx for my 93 pgt, and have been reading up in this thread. is there any gears we all have established would work for sure that will provide better gearing and strength or is it all still being discussed (lost the thread in the last few days due to not being on.) due to picking up this new trans i may as well gut it and throw the gears in while im there.

The Mazdaspeed Protege LSD diff ($700 new from Mazda) fits in our trannys. Search the forums. Someome already fitted it.

That's definately worth looking into I'm not going to get an LSD diff yet but I'll keep that in mind when looking at the junk yards.

When did you try out the MTX-75 differential for the Focus/Cougar how would the KL axles fit inside? Does it use the same diameter axles?

Or should somenone weld half of an Focus axle to the other Probe half?

Well I got the tranny today and then sometime right after New years when I get off 12 hour shifts I'm going to take the tranny to the shop and have them atempt to swap all the parts.

                    Hi..

After reading this topics and others about the tranny upgrade, I decided to buy a Ford Focus Tranny to upgrade my stock V6 2.5 tranny whit some synchro troubles...

According to the scrap yard, the tranny come from a 2001 Focus ZTS (4doors whit the 2.0L Zetec double cam).... And according to this treads, focus tranny are suppose to fit... And yes it's a 5-speeds

BUT I got a major problems : My (old) clutch disc dont even fit on the shaft!! My friends (my mechanical..) opened the tranny and he said that the arrangment of the gear, shaft et etc.. are not the same than ours tranny....

                    My questions :

By gettins a focus, contour or escort tranny internal, should the clutch for the stock v6 probe tranny fit directly, OR we need to buy a clutch for a focus, contour, and escort?

Secondly, do you know the exact code of the tranny (The code thats is on the sticker ON the tranny) that I need? The tranny I have NOW is coded : IS4R... Done some search and I think I need a XS4R tranny...

Someone can help me? I want my car back More than a week now whitout it...

                    Thanks!

let me answer some of your questions

the 2.0 and 2.5 guts are completely interchangeable
the escorts dont have the same trannies as the focus, cougar, and contour as far as i know. they have zetecs and duratecs wich use the mtx-75 that you speak of

if they were the same then we could all get Quaife guts for are trannies at whatver ratios we wanted with dog engagement and straight cut gears to put less stress on the sides of the case

the newer g series trannies are slightly different than the old ones. i used a 2003 protege trany for a donor, and rebuilt my tranny with the gears and such. but the new ones dont have the reverse idler setup under the small cover on top of fifth gear. so as i remember, the output shaft is shorter and the fifth gear setups are interchangable, but fifth was bad on the protege tranny so i used a 5 gear and output shaft from a 93 2.0 probe, and the 4.10 dif, input shaft, and gear clusters for 1-4 from the protege. you can see the difference in th covers on the ends of the trannies too, the new one is more compact on one half.

i built this tranny for top end, and with my turbo i have more than enough power to pull it. its a .717 overdrive with the 4.10 diff give my car the appx 165+. ive had the speedo at 145 with two friends and (ABS light)MPH, maybe 153, at about 6k give or take a few hundred rpms, i had my eyes on the road until my girlfiend saw the speedo and proceeded to freak out.
it was on the side of a flat bridge maybe .75 of a mile long where i did my run. anyway, the car handled great and i want to test it faster, but im gonna wait till i have standalone befor i push it too hard

So you're saying to me that the only tranny I can get it's from a escort whit the double cam 1998+ like jeff_jeske said? (ZX2?)

Focus tranny will not work... duh

If I get a tranny from a escort, I juste take out the 2 shaft (the shaft whit the gears on it) and put that in my V6 tranny and thats all? Or there is modification to do??

And I use a Clutch for the V6, or for the escort??

Id like someone to try this swap with the protege differential and see what problems they run into

Really, if you are going through the trouble why not get the lsd as well?

I dont think anyone ever said the focus would work.
I believe this to be the list of matching trannies:

                              87 Mazda 323 GT
                              90-94 Protege LX
                              91-94 Mercury Capri XR2
                              91-96 Escort GT, LX-E & Mercury Tracer
                              92-94 MX-3 GS (pos 1.8 v6)
                              93-97 MX-6 (both 4 and 6 cyl)
                              93-97 626 (both 4 & 6 cyl)
                              93-97 Probe (both 4 & 6 cyl)
                              95-98 Protege ES (1.8 dohc)
                              97-99 Kia Sephia (1.8 dohc)
97-present Ford Escort & ZX2's (i'm not sure of this but ppl tell me they use G-series too)
                              98-01 626 4 cyl (not sure about 6, i forgot if its a k-series)
01-03 Protege w/FS motor (2.0LX, ES, MP3, Protege5, MSP, and in 02' all DX and LX's got the 2.0 standard)

I have only tested the escort tranny because it is a direct drop in and you can find escorts everywhere. The trannies are dirt cheap.
As for the clutch, You use the probe clutch and all that jazz. The ONLY thing that gets moved over is the gear cluster. You lift it out of the ZX2 tranny and set it in the PGT tranny very easy.

As for the changes under the small cover. I have seen 4 different 5th gear arangments on PGT/MX6 trannies. I wish I would have taken pictures of all of them because some were more heavy duty looking than others.

The LSD from the mazdaspeed does work but its hard to come by. Some pictures in the following thread:
                              http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701102171

BobbyCoffins is using the MS LSD in his 323. I believe he purchased it directly from Mazda that probably cost a grip compared to sourcing one at a yard.

I was just speculating on the Focus stuff because the Escort guys get the Focus tranny's for their engines because the gearing is better and the Focus guys get the Contour Se/SVT tranny's because they are supposed to be better. I'm going to try the gears from the contour on the escort guts and we'll see what happens.
