  • We got it!

    Kind of...

H'ok! So here's the deal: We're still trying to sell the house in Cortland... but, they're letting us rent the house until that's sold. BUT... we're in Sept. 1st.

    • Good deal!

With respect to the compression test, I generally try to do around 6 cranks...However, in every test I've ever done, compression will not continue to rise after it peaks. You can crank until you're blue in the face, but once it has plateaued it won't go any higher...*maybe* slightly higher, but in all of my experiences when she peaks, she's done...

Either way, it sounds like Kiley's motor is a bit on the tired side. And that's putting it nicely.

        • Attempt #1 at getting my deck permit - failed.

The lady on the phone left out A TON of details that I need to have in the drawing, such as ledger board placement, joists, railing height, support post length/depth, whether I'm doing concrete blocks or sonic tubing, etc, etc, etc...

Attempt #2 may be had later today, if I get a chance to draw everything out again and make it down there...Either that or tomorrow...

            • Got to make sure the motor is warm. Crank the sucker until the pressure doesn't rise anymore. Also hold the throttle wide open while doing the test....

Not sure if you did it that way but thats how most people do it numbers are pretty consistent that way.

Also I was thinking did you guys check the timing on the car? If the timing is off the compression numbers can be off as well.

              • I'd probably disconnect the TPS if the throttle was to be held wide open. Don't want to fill the cyl with fuel or worse wash down them down removing the oil.

                • You pull the fuel pump relay (or fuse in some vehicles) and depressurize the fuel system before doing the test so no fuel is injected, Ant...At least I always do.

                  • All that I know is the first time I did it was with a UTI graduate and they told him 3 cranks. But yeah gotta pull the pump fuse and I also disconnect the disty.

                    Jeremy

P.S. Timing wasn't checked... I was going to but the crossmembers took forever to get done.

                    • Hiney's right...you can disconnect the disty, or just pull the 40A ignition main fuse on the Probe (and some other vehicles). That won't allow the distributor (or coils if electronic ignition) to fire. However, some vehicles require that fuse to complete the starter circuit, so they won't crank without it.

                        • I doubt timing would make one cylinder. Burnt valve, leaky head gasket or bad rings...

                            • Yeah we didn't get a chance to check it. I'm betting burnt valve... Doesn't really smoke. Just odd the valve would do that at that low of miles unless it got tarnished because it was open when he parked it over winter... He seafoamed it since. I'll text him tomorrow to see how he made out.
